Albert serves in the Coast Guard and knows a thing or two about saving lives. These pictures are a clear reminder that our work not only uplifts veterans, but brings military families even closer together through the shared responsibility of caring for an adopted dog or cat. Read this to end your week on a high note: Camren is active duty Air Force. One night he and his wife Cierra saw a dog wandering in their neighborhood. Closer inspection revealed a collar embedded in the dog's neck. To make matters worse, a Category 4 hurricane was mere hours away so they brought the dog to their home where they already had four others. Zia, they call her, joined the pack huddling in the bathroom during the hurricane's vicious assault. Following the storm and two weeks without power, Zia acted like this was her home for all of her life. After the hurricane passed the family and Pets for Patriots partners Humane Society of Valdosta Lowndes County made numerous attempts to reunite Zia with her family and, eventually, to find her a new one. But for anyone paying attention it was clear that Zia had made the decision herself: she was already home. So Camren made it official: this high-flying hero gave Zia the wings that every shelter animal longs for: the wings of freedom.

People sometimes ask us, "Why do you do what you do?" Because *this*: "We are doing awesome. We have settled into a routine and he is doing so good. He is such a loving dog, to me anyway, lol. He has made me feel so much better. He is just what I needed. He loves walks around the neighborhood, but mostly he loves to get pet and rubbed. Michael is an Iraq war veteran and a hero at home as well. In 2022 he visited Young-Williams Animal Center and saved Waylon, a handsome hound mix. But the Army veteran wasn't done saving lives. So earlier this year Michael went back to the shelter and added Otto to his pack! Pets for Patriots allows veterans to have two eligible pets at a time with full benefits for each - adopted together or over time. Great for saving bonded pairs or, like Michael, just sharing the love with two pets instead of one. ?? ??
