But A.I. models like AlphaFold make it possible to do that in a few hours or even minutes.” This is from great coverage by The The New York Times on this year’s Nobel Prize in Chemistry, which went to scientists using AI to predict the structure of millions of proteins and then invent a new one. With more than 20,000 citations in scientific studies, this is real, useful, transformative research, and a breakthrough that even experts believed was still years away. This recognition demonstrates AI’s impact beyond all the hype—but with two of the winners at Google (including CEO of their AI branch Demis Hassabis), the timing is ironic. Google faces possible breakup by regulators, one casualty of an increased scrutiny on the concentration of power that’s also part of the massive AI infrastructure build out. It’s hard not to see this as a demonstration of the necessary balance of innovation and responsibility in AI development and use. Back in May, we ran a poll asking employees how likely they are to bring up their mental health at work. The results were telling. The most popular response was “Not very likely” at 44%. This result is in line with research by NAMI, which found that, while 74% of full-time employees in the US say it is appropriate to discuss mental health concerns at work, only 58% say they feel comfortable talking about their mental health at work. This gap is a problem in our workforce, where employees crave more openness and resources surrounding mental health. The same NAMI survey found that 83% of employees agree mental health and well-being training is, or would be, important in creating a positive workplace culture. On World Mental Health Day, we want to encourage employers to invest in mental health resources and reduce the mental health stigma to create a sense of belonging at work.
