Earlier this week, PCPC and representatives from its member companies met with lawmakers in Sacramento, California, to discuss proposed state legislation and our industry position. Personal care products are essential to millions of consumers’ overall well-being, hygiene and beauty routines. On average, people use about 6 to 12 personal care products daily, including skin care, hair care, cosmetics, fragrances and toiletries. In California, our industry supports over 590,000 jobs, which is more than any other state. From jobs in research, development and manufacturing to retail and services, the beauty industry generates $27.4 billion in labor income and contributes $47.7 billion to California’s GDP. How long should you keep your favorite mascara or moisturizer? Understanding your products' shelf life will ensure the safest experience. Shelf life refers to how long a cosmetic or personal care product is at its best for use, as determined by the manufacturer. It’s all about safety and performance. In the U.S., expiration dates aren’t mandatory for cosmetics, but manufacturers must determine shelf life to ensure safety. However, OTC products like sunscreen do have expiration dates. Eye-area cosmetics like mascara have a shorter shelf life because they’re more vulnerable to bacteria. Replace mascara every 3–6 months to avoid eye infections and never add water or saliva. To keep your products safe: 1. Read instructions & follow warnings. 2. Keep lids tightly closed. 3. Store in cool, dry places (away from sunlight & heat). 4. Soap isn't the only personal care product that has passed the test of time. As far back as 10,000 BCE, cosmetics served as an integral part of Egyptian hygiene and health. Men and women in Egypt used scented oils and ointments to clean and soften their skin and mask body odor. Egyptian women often applied galena mesdemet (made of copper and lead ore) and malachite (bright green paste of copper minerals) to their faces for color and definition. They even used kohl (a combination of burnt almonds, oxidized copper, different colored coppers ores, lead, ash, and ochre) to adorn the eyes in an almond shape. Fast forward to the early Common Era when the Romans put barley flour and butter on their pimples and sheep fat and blood on their fingernails for polish. Indians incorporated pastes from the henna plant to paint intricate designs on their hands and feet. Throughout the middle ages, perfume trade became more prevalent and Elizabethan women even used egg whites over their faces. History shows that cosmetics and personal care products have been essential to the daily lives of humankind for millennia.
