Former prosecutors and defense lawyers are raising more predictions and concern over the nomination of Pam Bondi (below), President-elect Donald Trump’s latest pick for attorney general, with some lawyers concerned about her ability to remain independent from the White House as well as her lobbyist background. Questions remain whether Bondi will follow through on vows she made in television interviews to investigate what she called at the time out-of-control federal prosecutors. “The Department of Justice, the prosecutors will be prosecuted, the bad ones,” Bondi said on Fox News in 2023 after Trump was indicted in Georgia on charges of trying to overturn the results of the 2020 election. “The investigators will be investigated.” Some legal observers indicated that investigations could very likely be initiated under Bondi’s leadership. "Whether [Bondi] herself does it, or whether they appoint a special prosecutor to do it, I'd be quite surprised if they don't at least initiate investigations. Or maybe if there are congressional investigations, they'll be willing to sit it out, pending the results of those investigations,” said Danya Perry, founding partner of New York litigation boutique Perry Law and a former federal prosecutor in the Southern District of New York. “But there will be some form of investigative overtures, I think, into the thorns in the side of Trump during his first term and during his interregnum.” However, members of the legal community are also taking into account Trump's other DOJ appointments, including Todd Blanche, John Sauer and Emil Bove. "As a veteran of the Department of Justice, I think many people have some concerns, given [Bondi’s] lack of any experience within the federal Department of Justice. Obviously, she has relevant experience as Florida attorney general, but it is a whole new world,” said Perry. “I think a lot of prosecutors and former prosecutors are heartened to see that it appears that Trump also will be nominating some folks who do have a lot of institutional experience, including Todd Blanche and Emil Bove, and so I think that will mitigate some of those types of concerns." A former federal prosecutor, Jim Walden, who is running for New York City mayor, indicated some of the talk of investigations may be “more bark than bite.” “I am hopeful that cooler heads will prevail,” said Walden. “I would hope that that election victory would cause the president's administration to take the higher ground.” Full story from Abigail Adcox: https://lnkd.in/emzGhb2m
