In 2023, the U.S. added over 50GW of new generation capacity, with solar, both utility-scale (35%) and distributed (17%), accounting for more than half of new capacity for the first time. Meanwhile, new wind capacity additions (12%) declined for the third consecutive year to its lowest share since 2013. This slowdown is largely due to siting and permitting challenges, high capital costs, and difficulties in expanding transmission.
