Our principal, Jean Gath (right of center), attended the groundbreaking of the College of the Desert in Palm Springs, California, last Thursday, alongside architects WRNS Studio and Todd Campbell (far left) with MAAS Companies, Inc. the program manager overseeing the project for the College. Perkins Eastman | Pfeiffer was selected in 2020 to develop design guidelines for a 30-acre campus in Palm Springs, including 330,000 sq. ft. of collaborative learning spaces. Once the concept was approved, we transitioned to serving as the College’s Architectural Advisor, collaborating closely with WRNS to ensure the final design reflected the College’s vision for a highly flexible and adaptable facility that meets the needs of the local business community. The plan also supports the College of the Desert’s programs in hospitality, digital arts, health, and sustainability, featuring a Learning Hotel and industry partnerships. #perkinseastman #pfeiffer #collegeofthedesert #groundbreaking

They enjoyed networking during the three-day event, reconnecting with current clients, contractors, and consultant partners, as well as meeting new contacts. 25 years ago, we completed the Evo A. DeConcini Federal Courthouse, commissioned by the GSA (General Services Administration). The building occupies a 4-acre site in downtown Tucson, AZ, adjacent to the city’s Civic Center and other civic and state office buildings. The six-story, two-tower complex consolidated the U.S. District Courts, U.S. Magistrate Courts, U.S. Bankruptcy Courts, auxiliary federal judicial functions, the U.S. Attorney’s Office, U.S. Trustees, and U.S. Marshals Service, along with ancillary program elements, into a single facility. Other elements of the program include a circuit court library, ceremonial proceedings courtroom, judges’ conference room and dining facility, media/press room, jury assembly area, probation office, pretrial service office, and a cafeteria. Clad in aluminum curtainwall and corrugated metal, the structure reflects Tucson’s character in its materials and horizontal massing. It balances public accessibility with security requirements, responds to severe climatic challenges, and creates open space for community events. #perkinseastman #pfeiffer #throwback #throwbackthursday

We are proud to announce that our project, the adaptive reuse of the USC United University Church School for the School of Dramatic Arts (SDA) received both the 2024 Adaptive Reuse Award from the LA Business Council Architecture Awards and the 2024 Renovation/Restoration Award from Engineering News-Record Regional Best Projects. The project, which also includes the seismic upgrade of the historic 1931 structure, transforms and expands the facility to consolidate dramatic arts programs into one building, providing performance, teaching, and student spaces. With a goal of LEED Platinum, the building is an example of highly sustainable adaptive reuse of an historic structure. Starting with a master planning effort, this transformation enhances student engagement by creating new spaces for dining, study, and socializing, while reimagining existing buildings for entirely new functions. Key upgrades include the renovation of Buildings 19 and 19A, which now feature modern dining venues, a cafe/juice bar, student lounges, and a flexible event space. It’s World Architecture Day, and we’re celebrating a few of our past projects around the world that provide inspiring spaces that foster learning and innovation. The Irving K. Barber Learning Centre in Canada is a transformative expansion and renovation of the University of British Columbia’s historic main library. Mount Royal University’s Taylor Centre for the Performing Arts, also in Canada, is a world-class facility, featuring the 800-seat Bella Concert Hall. We designed the Library at the New American University, in Cairo, Egypt, which blends contemporary and traditional Islamic architecture and houses one of the largest English-language collections in the country.
