To kick off BrainHealth Week at the The University of Texas at Dallas, our Dallas studio and UTD’s Center for BrainHealth opened a first-of-its-kind, interactive “Brain Recharge Station.” Located in the UTD library, the unique exhibit encourages students to unplug, slow down, and feel their brain battery start to recharge. It marks a proactive approach to brain health, prompting students to take brain breaks that help combat chronic stress, boost creativity and innovation, enhance memory, and reduce the likelihood of becoming overwhelmed. Engaging the senses with art, biophilia, and other strategies that support well-being, the design soothes the mind with a gentle touch. Principals Debbie Beck, Ed.D., MPA, FACHA, and Vandana Nayak were proud to be on-site to unveil the Brain Recharge Station, also speaking before the event about the link between brain-healthy design and behavioral health—with an introduction from BBS Dean Adam J. Woods and Janet Koslovsky, research coordinator at Center for BrainHealth. Let’s talk: #organicforms. Organic architecture is a design philosophy that posits a harmonious relationship between human ingenuity and nature. Rooted in the beauty and complexity of organic forms, this approach finds inspiration in natural shapes, patterns, and materials to create buildings and spaces that flow with the landscape rather than imposing upon it. More than simply an aesthetic theory, its hallmarks are innovation and sustainability—its fluid, non-linear forms result in structures that are breathtaking, timeless, and at the forefront of performance-based design. Blurring the lines between art, function, and science, organic architecture offers a visionary path toward a more ecological and inspired way of living.?Check out these examples of organic architecture from our portfolio. Featured Projects: 1. Nemesis Coffee at Great Northern Way Pavilion 2. Huzhou Urban Planning Exhibition Museum 3. Beijing Performing Arts Center 4. Springfield High School 5. VanDusen Botanical Garden Visitor Centre 6. University of Aberdeen Library 7. Waterfront Botanical Gardens 8. Huzhou General Hospital

Join us in welcoming Michael Bryan II as our 2025 Phil Freelon Fellow! Launched in 2016, the fellowship aims to diversify architecture by offering financial support and expanded academic opportunities to underrepresented students in the design profession. It’s a collaboration between Harvard University Graduate School of Design—where Mike is currently in his second year—and the late Phil Freelon, former design director of our North Carolina practice, whose legacy continues to inspire future leaders to use design as a tool for positive social change. We recently sat down with Mike to discuss his explorations in landscape architecture and how it can evolve into a powerful tool for environmental remediation, social justice, and cultural memorial: https://lnkd.in/g5eRF8Tr

An education to remember: Iranzamin, also known as Tehran International School, was the first of seven schools worldwide to launch the International Baccalaureate diploma program. Although Iranzamin means “Land of Iran,” students from more than 50 countries attended the English-language co-ed school and were encouraged to learn about other cultures. The school’s student-centered design fostered community and diversity, and the respectful culture dispelled stereotypes. Iranzamin graduated its last class in 1980 following the Iranian Revolution, and the government took over the school. Mani Ardalan Farhadi, the last class president, valedictorian, and yearbook editor, shares her memories of the school and her reflections on its enduring influence.?? Did you know that for many healthcare organizations, the biggest operational challenge isn’t always the clinical space—administrative offices can be challenging too! As one client put it: "Our office space is 15% of our real estate portfolio, but it takes up 50% of our time to manage." As healthcare evolves, organizations are adopting smarter, more flexible ways of working. Technology, new work models, and a focus on efficiency are driving this shift. From supporting hybrid and remote work to fostering equitable accommodations and leading change management efforts, we’re designing spaces that empower people and improve outcomes. The nonprofit Habitable (formerly Healthy Building Network) has been investigating the impacts of construction products for decades. Habitable takes a comprehensive view by considering the impacts of materials during production, installation, use, and disposal. They’ve made it easier for designers to choose building materials for new construction or remodels with rankings for common product categories with guidance called Informed?. Making a healthier choice is as simple as avoiding the red side of the spectrum and favoring the green side. This brief overview of the guide shows materials like insulation, countertops, wall surfaces, and more.? What if the future of retail looks more like healthcare? Thanks to Architectural Record for featuring our transformation of a former “dead mall” in Rochester, NY, into one of the largest orthopedic and ambulatory surgery centers in the Northeast: https://shorturl.at/3uSnJ Designed in partnership with The S/L/A/M Collaborative (SLAM), we’ve revitalized the space once occupied by a 1980s Sears into the Saunders Center for Orthopedics & Physical Performance at the University of Rochester. This project not only serves as a regional healthcare hub but also establishes a model for how healthcare development can breathe new life into former retail spaces.
