In honor of #HispanicHeritageMonth, The American Institute of Architects (AIA) honored the work and contributions of nine #Hispanic and #Latinx architects, including our very own Omar Calderon, AIA. Born and raised in Bayamón, Puerto Rico, Omar has been a principal at Perkins Eastman for 26 years now, where he leads the design of high-performance, resilient #school facilities that shape and improve the lives of students, teachers, and staff for the better. His sketches via SketchUp have been widely featured, and his design portfolio encompasses a wide span of national and international work, with projects in China, C?te d’Ivoire, Germany, Guatemala, Peru, India, and Thailand, among others. Perkins Eastman has won an Award of Excellence from NAIOP DC|MD in the category of “Best Institutional Facility” for our work on The Catholic University of America’s Garvey Hall, a new 350-seat dining facility that knits together the academic and residential districts of the university’s campus. Held at the Javits Center in NYC, the exhibition brought together developers, entrepreneurs, and investors from around the world to discuss the trends and challenges that are shaping global real estate and to learn about international investment opportunities in the Middle East, North Africa, and beyond. Tanya Eagle, senior associate and leader of sustainability standards at Perkins Eastman, has served as co-chair of the AIA Materials Pledge Working Group since 2023, and was instrumental in creating the Materials Pledge reporting framework that is tracking the progress of more than 280 signatories of the AIA Materials Pledge. Our team recently attended the groundbreaking ceremony for Forrestal Elementary School in North Chicago, IL. Perkins Eastman’s Heather Cain, Josh Bergman, Sean O'Donnell FAIA LEED AP, Omar Calderon, AIA, Baine Rydin, Larryn Smerling, Ati Rahimpour, AIA, NOMA, LEED AP, and Michael Cipriani all joined the event. Located at Naval Station Great Lakes, the new school prioritizes literacy, nourishment, and holistic learning to transform educational opportunities in North Chicago. By incorporating #sustainable design strategies, Forrestal Elementary is on track to become one of the first #netzero schools both in the Midwest and on a military base.
