Children often catch colds, and while it’s tempting to reach for over-the-counter (OTC) medications, many aren't suitable for kids under six years old due to potential side effects and safety concerns. Instead, there are a few supplements and natural remedies that can be considered, but always with caution and preferably under the guidance of a healthcare provider. Check out Pequot Health Care's September edition of Skeehchooash, "What Supplements Can Kids Take for Cough & Cold?" National Immunization Awareness Month (NIAM) is a crucial time to highlight the importance of vaccines in protecting public health. Pequot Health Care would like to emphasize several key points during this month: 1. Protection Across All Ages: Vaccines are not just for children. They protect people of all ages, from infants to the elderly, against preventable diseases like the flu, measles, and pneumonia. 2. Community Immunity: Increasing the number of people vaccinated helps protect those who cannot vaccinate for medical reasons.? 3. Updated Vaccinations: It’s essential to keep your vaccinations up to date, especially with new and emerging diseases. Regular check-ups with healthcare providers can ensure you’re protected. 4. Travel and Vaccination: If you’re planning to travel, certain vaccines may be required or recommended depending on your destination. Check with your healthcare provider well in advance of your trip. 5. Addressing Vaccine Hesitancy: Misinformation about vaccines can lead to hesitancy. It’s crucial to rely on credible information sources and have open conversations with healthcare providers about any concerns. 6. Vaccination and Chronic Conditions: People with chronic health conditions may be at higher risk for complications from certain diseases. Vaccination can provide an added layer of protection. Pequot Health Care encourages everyone to talk to their healthcare providers about the vaccines they need and to participate in National Immunization Awareness Month by spreading the word about the importance of vaccines in protecting individual and community health. Drug-induced nutritional depletion is a critical topic for anyone taking medications. Here’s a summary of the key points shared by Pequot Health Care: Common Mechanisms of Nutritional Depletion: 1. Interference with Absorption: ??- Gastrointestinal Effects: Drugs like proton pump inhibitors (PPIs) and antacids alter stomach acidity, hindering the absorption of vital nutrients such as vitamin B12, calcium, magnesium, and iron. ??- Chelation: Certain antibiotics, including tetracyclines and fluoroquinolones, bind minerals like calcium and iron, preventing their absorption. 2. Altered Metabolism: ??- Enzyme Activity: Some medications (e.g., phenytoin, carbamazepine) induce liver enzymes, accelerating the breakdown of nutrients like vitamin D and folic acid. ??- Nutrient Competition: Drugs may compete with nutrients for metabolic pathways, affecting their conversion and activation. 3. Increased Excretion: ??Diuretics can lead to a loss of water-soluble vitamins and minerals such as potassium and magnesium. ??- Laxatives: Frequent use may result in the loss of electrolytes and water-soluble vitamins due to increased bowel movements. 4. Impaired Storage: ??- Liver Function: Medications affecting liver health (e.g., statins) can impair the storage of fat-soluble vitamins like A, D, E, and K. Examples of Drug-Induced Depletions: - Statins: Can reduce Coenzyme Q10 levels, causing muscle pain. - Metformin: Long-term use may lead to vitamin B12 deficiency, potentially causing neuropathy or anemia. - Oral Contraceptives May deplete B vitamins and minerals like magnesium and zinc. - Antidepressants (SSRIs): Can affect sodium balance, risking hyponatremia. - Corticosteroids: Can lower levels of calcium, vitamin D, potassium, and magnesium, raising osteoporosis risk. Managing Nutritional Depletions: - Monitoring: Regular checks of nutrient levels in patients on long-term medication can catch deficiencies early. - Dietary Adjustments: Eating nutrient-rich foods can help counteract deficiencies. - Supplementation: Sometimes, supplements may be needed to address significant depletions. - Medication Review: Discussing your medication regimen with healthcare providers can help minimize nutritional impacts. Conclusion: Being aware of drug-induced nutritional depletions is vital for maintaining overall health. Please always contact your healthcare providers about any concerns regarding your medications. Together, you can ensure a balanced approach to managing your medications and nutritional needs. Telly Demestihas, Dr. John Grossomanides, Jennifer Webb RPh, AE-C, Heather Angel Mars-Martins
