  • Food scrap composting is coming to the Health & Human Services building. Food waste makes up 23% of the waste stream in the U.S. Composting not only cuts down on the amount of food going into the landfill...but also reduces methane production at landfills and helps to maintain healthy soils.

    • Items for food scrap composting only: fruit, vegetables, egg shells, nuts, coffee, bread, grain, pasta, meat, fish, dairy, bones, BPI certified compostable paper and bags.
    • Shrimp tails and a T-bone get the new food waste composting program started at the Health & Human Services building.

  • After years of planning, saving, and hard work, we’re thrilled to announce that the Peoria City/County Health Department, Coroner's Office, Regional Office of Education, and Sustainability Department are officially open for business in the Health & Human Services building! While having new construction is certainly a win (no more leaky roofs!), the real game-changer is the enhanced technology, more efficient workspaces, and modernized health and clinical areas that will allow us to better serve the residents of Peoria County for years to come. This incredible achievement wouldn't have been possible without the collaborative efforts of the Peoria County Board, Board of Health, department leaders, and an outstanding team of partners—including Farnsworth Group, River City Construction, countless subcontractors, and hundreds of dedicated workers. A special shoutout to our amazing Peoria County team members who went above and beyond—adapting to changes, working from temporary locations, troubleshooting technology, and putting in long hours to make this vision a reality. Your dedication and resilience have truly made this project a success! We’re excited to welcome the community into this state-of-the-art space and continue our mission of providing top-quality services to Peoria County residents.
