    I learned a new word last week (I love a new word, the swearier the better but that’s for another post/social media platform). I am in the process of qualifying with Lumina Learning and one of our facilitators used the word ‘Equanimity’, I had to Google it and it means calmness and composure, especially in difficult situations. This is such a critical leadership skill. Every leadership program I facilitate, I always open up with ‘think of a brilliant leader, what makes them brilliant?’ Without exception, composure, calmness or similar words come up. There is such a thing as emotional contagion, where other people feel what we feel so when we are showing our stresses, frustrations, negative emotions - people feel and will mirror them. People want passion, conviction, authenticity and vulnerability in their leaders, the tension lies in keeping your leadership cool when things are tough. Equanimity is a lovely word and a reminder of its importance. I plan to use the word and definitely practice it.

    My first article for a while. Inspired by something I heard on Hogan Assessments 'The Science of Personality' podcast... 'Leadership is consequential, measurable and improvable'. Peter Berry When working with senior leaders, we talk a lot about defining and creating a leadership legacy, the impact you want to make as a leader (leadership is consequential). The path to creating a positive and enduring legacy starts with a deep understanding of ourselves (leadership is measurable). Building self-awareness and a strategic leadership development plan is what ultimately enables leaders to live their legacy (leadership is improvable). Thank you Hogan Assessments for a brilliant podcast - I listen to every episode and learn lots from every one of them.     Well this feels incredibly special! We, along with our wonderful client and collaborator Opencast are joint finalists in this year's North East HR&D Awards - Excellence in People & Organisational Development category. It feels special because I've never entered us for an award and to be shortlisted, especially for this particular set of awards feels amazing. But...it is mostly special because it is in partnership with my friends at Opencast. I have been working with the team for coming up to 3 years and I have really valued the opportunity to work with such an inclusive, ambitious and progressive organisation. I have learned so much from the work we do and the people I have had the privilege of working with. The fact that it is in partnership with Opencast also makes it special because for me it is about showcasing work that has impact.
