I learned a new word last week (I love a new word, the swearier the better but that’s for another post/social media platform). I am in the process of qualifying with Lumina Learning and one of our facilitators used the word ‘Equanimity’, I had to Google it and it means calmness and composure, especially in difficult situations. This is such a critical leadership skill. Every leadership program I facilitate, I always open up with ‘think of a brilliant leader, what makes them brilliant?’ Without exception, composure, calmness or similar words come up. There is such a thing as emotional contagion, where other people feel what we feel so when we are showing our stresses, frustrations, negative emotions - people feel and will mirror them. People want passion, conviction, authenticity and vulnerability in their leaders, the tension lies in keeping your leadership cool when things are tough. Equanimity is a lovely word and a reminder of its importance. I plan to use the word and definitely practice it.

Peter Berry When working with senior leaders, we talk a lot about defining and creating a leadership legacy, the impact you want to make as a leader (leadership is consequential). The path to creating a positive and enduring legacy starts with a deep understanding of ourselves (leadership is measurable). Building self-awareness and a strategic leadership development plan is what ultimately enables leaders to live their legacy (leadership is improvable).
