Over the next 18 years, states are tasked with allocating their portion of the $50 billion dollar opioid settlements from manufacturers, distributors, and retailers. To aid policymakers in this critical decision, a national coalition of 130 organizations comprised of public health experts and drug reform advocates from across more than 30 states has released a roadmap directing funds to evidence-based solutions to eliminate preventable overdose deaths. Policies must include funding access to all forms of FDA-approved medication and harm reduction services, expanding housing and wraparound support services for people who use drugs and those with drug-related convictions, and supporting second-chance employment, recovery-to-work programs, and the expungement of past criminal convictions.
