Thank you to the Pittsburgh Business Times for highlighting our ongoing partnership with Peoples Natural Gas! https://lnkd.in/giFGbnFE -------------------- By?Jake Dabkowski?– Reporter, Pittsburgh Business Times (PBT) Feb 7, 2025 STORY HIGHLIGHTS - Peoples Energy Analytics partners with Peoples Natural Gas in Allegheny County. - Destenie Nock, PhD founded Peoples Energy Analytics from?Carnegie Mellon University?research. - Peoples Energy Analytics was previously a PBT Startup to Watch Despite having incredibly similar names and both operating in the same industry, Peoples Natural Gas and local startup Peoples Energy Analytics are completely separate companies — but they're working together. Peoples Energy Analytics was born from research at Carnegie Mellon University done by Destenie Nock, a professor at CMU's College of Engineering. Nock realized that there are an estimated 25 million households in America that are eligible for low-income energy assistance programs to cover utility bills that don't know that they qualify. From that research, Nock founded Peoples Energy Analytics to provide a business solution to utility providers to identify at-risk consumers with the goal of creating a win-win scenario for both the provider and consumer — the energy companies get paid through the subsidy and the consumer doesn't have to risk going cold. Now Peoples Energy Analytics has partnered with Peoples Natural Gas to analyze homes in Allegheny County throughout this year's winter heating season to enroll homes in Peoples' Customer Assistance Program or apply for assistance through the Low Income Housing Energy Assistance Program. "We believe every person who is eligible to participate in our assistance programs should benefit from them," Peoples Natural Gas Community Assistance Programs Director Rita Black said in a prepared statement. "Collaborating with Peoples Energy Analytics has already helped us better identify individuals in areas in Allegheny County to target for additional outreach." Peoples Energy Analytics was previously named a?Pittsburgh Business Times Startup to Watch.?The company has raised over $600,000 to date and operates both remotely and out of Innovation Works' office in Bloomfield. "We're thrilled to be able to deploy our data algorithms to identify households that are struggling to afford their energy bills and then connect them with assistance," CEO Nock said in a prepared statement. "Peoples has proven itself to be an innovative and forward-thinking organization that understands the importance of gaining a deep understanding of its customer's needs."

Last week the sound of a pipe bursting somewhere inside my wall, followed by a geyser of water gushing from my kitchen cabinet, interrupted one of my work calls. The culprit: freezing temperatures in Pittsburgh. The estimated cost of repairs are $950 and counting, just for the pipes. I had taken all the recommended steps, such as keeping the thermostat above 55°F (no energy limiting behavior here) and running a constant trickle of hot water through the system, but these measures weren’t enough when it was –5°F outside. Halfway through the night my pipes froze. Later my dad would tell me that at –5°F water should flow in a constant stream, not a drip. Winters like this, with some of the coldest temperatures in years, highlight the urgent need to address energy insecurity and increase awareness of assistance programs. Several weeks ago, I shared an WESA article (see below) about our work with Peoples Natural Gas and Rita Black. Together, we’ve been identifying households in need of support this winter and connecting them with critical assistance programs. The goal? Empower people to help themselves – and that starts with meeting them where they are and ensuring they know about the resources available. Together, we’re raising awareness about assistance programs in an effort to reach more people – and I’m excited to build on this important work for the rest of this winter and into the next. Our founder and CEO Destenie Nock, PhD spoke last Friday on a panel at the Kleinman Center for Energy Policy at the University of Pennsylvania. The workshop was part of a national series on advancing energy-related research and was focused on effectively translating and disseminating energy system decarbonization research to various external audiences, including policymakers, industry representatives, media, and the public. #decarbonization #energytransition
