关于我们

Energy insecurity shows up in different ways. Homes are kept at unsafe or unhealthy temperatures. Competing necessities such as medication or food aren’t purchased. Payments are missed, resulting in disconnections or outages. To address energy insecurity, we need analytics-driven solutions focused on targeting and assisting individuals who may be overlooked. Our vision is to dramatically reduce energy insecurity by working alongside utility companies to accurately identify households in need of financial assistance, segment them across key demographic categories, and approach them with direct support opportunities.

?? We are excited about the insights discussed in "Reducing Energy Burden in the Power Sector: Metrics for Assessing Energy Poverty," published in the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers (IEEE) latest issue of Power and Energy Magazine, "Equity and Justice in Power Systems: The Power Systems Field Meets "Environmental Justice." ? Authored by Destenie Nock, PhD, Andrew J. Jones Jr., PhD, ENV SP, Stefan Bouzarovski, Harriet Thomson, and Dominic Bednar, Ph.D., EIT. ??The paper is available at https://lnkd.in/egFHbezR, ??The open-access version is available at https://lnkd.in/dQ7MmDj4. The paper explains how energy burden and other metrics can be used to support decision-making within the power sector. The authors describe present-day challenges of only using energy burden and a push for practitioners to "break down" the components of residential energy demand to identify barriers and adequate levels of consumption. As the United States continues to push for policies such as Justice40, there are many lessons that can be learned from the European Union regarding the integration of energy burden into practice, methodological caveats, and direct and indirect consequences. The following actions were recommended: 1?? weatherization, 2?? community engagement, and 3?? residential technology deployments. The authors also provided action steps for practitioners: ?? Tracking the impacts of energy investments through the use of high-resolution data (e.g., demographic surveys and AMI), ?? Support weatherization efforts, ?? Leverage existing relationships with the community, ?? Tie incentives of infrastructure and technology upgrades to the electric meter and ??Develop a baseline for sufficient energy and evaluate if households are experiencing energy deficits. One question this article poses that resonates with us is, "Are residents securing an adequate level of energy usage to be safe and productive in their homes?" ?Comment below with your thoughts: What does an adequate level of energy usage mean to you?

PEA would like to highlight a notice and request for comments for a new U.S. Energy Information Administration on residential utility disconnections. While the comment period has passed, the data that will be collected through this survey will be crucial to identifying the characteristics of those most likely to experience a disconnection. Understanding who gets disconnected and why is key to making sure no one, especially vulnerable communities, is unfairly impacted and put at risk during increasing extreme weather events. Good data on disconnections helps policymakers create solutions that ensure equitable and reliable energy access for everyone. This isn't just about stats—it's about making sure energy systems are fair for those who need them most. We are extremely proud to announce that Peoples Energy Analytics has been awarded first place in the Richard King Mellon Foundation Social Impact Pitch Competition. The annual contest awards funds to companies making a positive social impact in one or more of the foundation’s main focus areas: economic development and mobility, environmental conservation, and health and well-being. Investments range from $200,000 to $500,000, with the first-place winner receiving the highest funding. The foundation has invested more than $17 million into 60 for-profit companies since its inaugural competition in 2021. Thank you to the Richard King Mellon Foundation for their dedication to supporting social impact, and thank you to Madaleine Rubin and the Pittsburgh Post-Gazette for covering the story: https://lnkd.in/etrr9Ckn #socialimpact #energyjustice

Our very own Destenie Nock, PhD will be a speaker at RE+24 (www.re-plus.com) on a panel entitled "Grid Equity in the Clean Energy Transition." This session takes place on September 10 at 4pm Pacific and is scheduled to feature Will Kenworthy, Jackie Omotalade, Alejandro Moreno, Jose Bodipo Memba, and Joan White. The session description: "As utilities, regulators, developers, and advocates seek pathways to advance the energy transition, it's critical that dimensions of equity inform planning and deployment decisions. During this session, panelists will discuss the importance that grid equity plays in this transition. A "grid equity" lens can help to understand disparities in distribution grid reliability, involuntary disconnection from service, and hosting capacity for distributed energy resources, among other factors. To ensure a just transition, grid equity metrics need to inform how distribution and transmission grids are planned, how resources are deployed, and how utilities and developers are incentivized to deploy capital."
