Del 2 al 6 de diciembre participaremos en América Abierta, un encuentro organizado por el Open Government Partnership y el Governo do Brasil para la comunidad de Gobierno Abierto en América Latina, que este a?o se celebrará en Brasilia, Brasil. Desde Fundación Corona y People Powered lideraremos el taller "Transformando los modelos mentales de la democracia para el Estado Abierto en América Latina”, que se llevará a cabo el 2 de diciembre en el Instituto Serzedello Corrêa - ISC. Este espacio busca reunir a la comunidad regional de Gobierno Abierto para reflexionar sobre la transformación de los modelos mentales en torno a la democracia y avanzar hacia un enfoque de Estado Abierto. Sometimes it’s hard to see the long-term impact of our work. What will what we do today look like in 2, 5 years down the road? Two years ago, I was onboarding the first cohort of the Climate Democracy Accelerator—a pilot program developed by People Powered and supported by the World Resources Institute. It took countless hours and dedication from so many people to make it a reality. And now, we’re seeing the results: graduates like Kudzaiishe Seti from the Green Institute in Zimbabwe are driving real, impactful change, getting more people involved in decisions that shape their lives. I’m thrilled to celebrate the work of the Green Institute, creating new climate policies together with the most affected by Cyclone Idai. They’re what make my work meaningful every day. We just opened applications for FOUR accelerators, including the 5th cohort of the Climate Democracy Accelerator with the support of Waverley Street Foundation and Open Government Partnership. For the past 15 years, the Swedish Association of Local Authorities and Regions, Sveriges Kommuner och Regioner, has been promoting and supporting participatory democracy across the country, building up the democratic skills, capacity, and creativity of civil servants and politicians. I’ve been fortunate to be able to support and collaborate with them over these many years, and it was truly impressive today seeing how they’ve shifted how government works. This was the multimedia day of my European tour, as we produced a webcast and podcast for government officials and workers across Sweden. The participation leads for over 50 cities and regions joined us to talk about how to level up their work. They’re already running participatory budgeting, planning, and policy-making, with all the joys and challenges typical of that work. Now they’re eager to connect and deepen those efforts, to build stronger ecosystems of democracy. In the wake of the US election, we also discussed how we need to go beyond “defending democracy” - not just defending the limited system of electoral democracy, but instead expanding our practice of democracy so that it delivers on people’s needs and desires.
