People Experience & Culture Leader // Building empowered teams and personalization at scale with a healthy dose of empathy

POps has been popping since we officially brought Velir and Brooklyn Data Co. (a Velir company) employees into "one house" at the start of the year, so I was very much looking forward to the People Ops Leaders, The Future of Team Summit. The event did not disappoint! I've pulled together lingering thoughts ever since then, especially as we continue to bring our two cultures together: ?? Personalized Productivity Stacey Nordwall emphasized that productivity cannot be uniformly defined from one individual to another. While measuring productivity is a given within a consultancy like Velir, billable hours is only a fraction of that puzzle. How did our team feel in getting there? What were the actual client outcomes? Those intersections are where true productivity and a thriving culture is discovered. ? Empowerment through Choice Anessa Fike made a compelling analogy between POps and parenting, specifically in highlighting the importance of empowering individuals through choice while staying aligned to business goals. Questions on my mind as I continue to build out career frameworks for the rest of our teams: How might this support the up and/or across growth opportunities? How might this encourage self-directed learning while keeping aligned on the company side? Side Note: ICYMI Tom Griffiths has something cool going on that gets at effectively scaling personalized learning at Hone ?? ?? Good Culture is Consistent From Jennifer Kim: "there’s no such thing as bad culture." It's a powerful reminder to examine inconsistencies in our messaging and misalignment of our actions. Strong culture can't be outsourced to AI. Otherwise, we risk contributing to a generic, Pinterest-driven "millenial grey" monoculture devoid of genuine identity and engagement. This is especially on my mind after chatting through the challenges of a globally-distributed, multidiscilpinary org with Anisha Thomas (I feel so seen!): companies also have subcultures, and supporting their identities is critical toward building a cohesive, yet diverse org culture. ?? AI Enables, Not Replaces Vanesa Cotlar, MBA and Yin Wu provided valuable insights and reminders into the role of AI in the workplace: eliminating tedium, focusing on the human side. I loved Yin's analogy here: AI is like an intern with strong textbook knowledge but still needs good training and feedback to be successful. In my more frequent usage over the past year, I find that AI helps me to better organize my thoughts and ideas when drafting comms, but less useful in generating fresh ones. ?? My Overall Takeaway Bye, Future of Work. ?? ...and Hello, Future of Team! ?? We are going to innovate and lead with empathy and purpose because we're embracing flexibility, leveraging technology responsibly, and building values-aligned cultures. I am so grateful (and frankly, flattered) to be personally invited by Shun Yamada. Thank you again! #CultureFirst #InclusionMatters #PeopleExperience

We had so much fun at the Future of Team Summit in Napa yesterday???Alongside 60+ People leaders, Lauren Dai and Jaakko Iso-J?rvenp?? had the chance to meet some of our incredible customers in person (shout out to Ed Snook from Mysten Labs and the Lattice team!) While we loved chatting with everyone, our favorite moment was hearing from a People Ops leader about their experience using our paid leave benchmarks tool to expand their parental leave policy at their start up????? Thanks for hosting such a great day Retreat!

I'm late to the party on my post, but... Seeing so many friends (too many to mention) in Napa last week at The Future of Team Summit was a blast. Meeting people IRL I've known online for 3+ years will never get old. Neither will California wine country. Thank you to the Retreat team for having me on to moderate the panels!

I want to express my heartfelt gratitude to everyone who participated in the "Future Team Summit."?? Special thanks to our sponsors, Cocoon Lauren Dai, who supported the summit. Ian White, ChartHop who constantly mentored and encouraged us, To Alex Hilleary, we prepared this Summit together and handled all sessions?? To all the founders who participated in the sessions despite their busy schedules, To serial entrepreneurs Tom Griffiths and Yin Wu and Kaitlyn Knopp also helped with online sessions, To Jennifer Kim, adjusting your busy schedule just for a session. And to Vanesa Cotlar, MBA, who has believed in us since the early days of our community and has led us, to Melanie Naranjo, who always treats us with kindness and shares positive insight and happiness with everyone, to Stacey Nordwall who always provides terrific feedback and support us, and to Matt Hoffman who offered valuable session and VC insights, and to Anessa Fike share sharp perspectives, and organized special book signing session, to Theresa Joseph our fellow companions running ahead of us. To Michaela Kolackova, who led as the community manager for this event, to our Retreat companions Shun Yamada Yamada and Lorena Manrique Manrique, and to those who came to the event—Harleigh Gabrielson , Janet Lee , Cecily W. Jess P. Leonard P., Sara Wong snd Kim Minnick —thank you very much. This event was made possible thanks to every one of you who participated. Thank you so much. Although the time was short, I hope this summit was a meaningful experience for all of you. In this rapidly changing era, HR cannot easily manage remote and distributed teams alone. However, your daily efforts ensure fair opportunities for all, fair evaluations, and a world without disparities regardless of where one is born or lives. Without People ops, the “future of work” and “future of teams” cannot be realized. We look forward to continuing this movement with you?? Thank you again. People Ops Leaders

Spending time with other people people inspires me! The Future of Team Summit hosted by People Ops Leaders was incredibly insightful. The room was a mix of HR leaders and founders and the panels and conversations were incredible. Jack Tadami and Shun Yamada did a fantastic job in bringing this community together. I am grateful I was able to share some thoughts on how HR can innovate with AI. I think about AI as our smartest intern - super helpful but still requiring oversight and training. For me and my team introducing repeatable workflows via Kindo and being able to co-create a new performance review process alongside Hypercontext have been game-changers for our team's efficiency and the support we can offer managers! If you haven't started the journey yet, don't worry. Just start playing with the least sensitive items so you can get familiar - I suggest using information already publicly available (e.g., creating 30-60-90 day plans by using job descriptions). A few highlights from the day: - The CEO and CPO relationship can be an extremely strong one. It is up to both sides to communicate their needs clearly and work on building a deeply trusting relationship. - The CEO and CPO metrics need to be aligned. That is key for a consistent business and people strategy. - When HR leaders go to their CEOs, it is important to remember that CEOs have a lot more on their plate beyond the people function. Be succinct on what you need and where possible, send pre-reads / share data. - The more HR focuses on ARR, the closer we are to the business. Think about the people strategy and issues in terms of how they affect company strategy. It was great seeing familiar faces as well as meeting some incredible new humans! You were the highlight of my time: Kim Minnick, Ian White, Alex Hilleary, Anessa Fike, Jennifer Kim, Kaitlyn Knopp, Lauren Dai, Melanie Naranjo, Matt Hoffman, Michaela Kolackova, Mikaela Zaffino, Rachel DeSimone, Stacey Nordwall, Yin Wu, Lisah Barry, Cecily W.! #hr #leadership #peers
