#WorldSpayDay: Sofie is just 1 & 1/2 years-old, and her health & well-being is so important for her family. When they brought her to PFA to be spayed, our team ensured that she benefitted from the same quality care that we provide to each and every one of the 20,000 animals that receive our surgical skills: https://bit.ly/givepfa And Sofie's dad was thrilled to update us on his furbaby's recovery: "Day 1 of course she was a bit woozy, however my wife Mona brought her home without any issues and she slept until I got home from work. She was excited I was home, and greeted me at the door as she normally does, but then she found her bed and went back to sleep. So cute! The surgeon did a perfect job. Her incision looked so clean and perfect on day 1. We watched her closely over the [next] 2 weeks and honestly she never acted as if she had any pain or discomfort at all! In fact I believe she didn’t even know there was an incision on her cute belly... I am so appreciative that the Robbinsville team protected my baby." We are honored to provide families with everyday miracles like these! However, our nonprofit organization is facing a big challenge: inflation is dramatically increasing the cost of providing care. We strive to keep our fees as low as possible for all clients; our spay/neuter fees are less than the administrative costs we incur, but we are feeling the strain as those expenses continue to increase. February is very special for People for Animals, Inc: it's Spay/Neuter Awareness Month! Your pet will be healthier & happier after they have been spayed or neutered, and there are so many benefits for your family. Altered pets are less likely to mark their territory and have fewer tendencies to roam. Spayed females have a lower risk of breast cancer and life-threatening uterine infections, while neutered males have no risk of testicular disease and a lower risk of prostate diseases. PFA has been providing low-cost, high-volume spay/neuter services in New Jersey since 1983. Our clean, professional, and well-equipped facilities have grown to become the leading provider of S/N procedures across the state. Because of our surgeons’ expertise utilizing the latest techniques, smaller incisions, and shorter anesthesia time, our patients suffer very little pain and have a fast recovery. The Grey Muzzle Organization is helping support senior dogs through PFA's Sweet Pea Fund, and together we aided Layla, a nine-year-old pit bull that has lived with her human Tameka since she was just a six-week-old puppy. Tameka describes Layla as a positive girl, who thrives when she receives other people’s good energy, and for this dog-mom, Layla is “her heart.” After a vet diagnosed a lump on Layla as benign, Tameka thought all was well… until one day “she just went down. She hid herself because she didn't want to be bothered.” Tameka rushed Layla, now suffering from dehydration, back to the vet and received a different diagnosis: pyometra, a uterine infection that can be fatal. PFA’s cost for pyometra surgery on a senior dog averages to $700; this has been found to be one-tenth of the price at a private practice, which can sadly be prohibitively-expensive for many working-class families. Tameka urgently looked for an affordable solution as Layla lost twenty pounds in five days; PFA brought relief in their eleventh hour: “I literally carried her into your office. I was in tears. I was expecting them to tell me there was nothing they could do for her.” Tameka says Layla is “a pretty old girl” and as the infection worsened, she feared the worst: “She was really bad-off before I got her to you… I didn't want her to suffer, I was ready to put her down.” Our vets were able to assuage Tameka’s worries and successfully perform surgery on Layla! This lucky gal received lots of TLC from her mom who went above and beyond with a special diet, and got her back to a healthy weight within a week. This pittie can enjoy even more of her golden years in the only home she’s even known, and her mother feels the same way: “I'm so grateful. You might remember little Salem from our epic cat hoarding rescue at the end of the summer; he was struggling with a respiratory infection, tapeworms, fleas, and even more medical complications. Since we rescued him, he has been recuperating in a Whole Families Program foster home, alongside his siblings Agnes and Delilah. All three dealt with respiratory issues (while Delilah also had to overcome eye infections) and the recovery has been slow for these little kitties. Fortunately, this feline trio can take as long as they need to feel better. PFA’s fosters are showering them with compassion, patience, and lots of TLC. They’re all growing quickly and their playful personalities are shining through. Salem and his sisters have been having fun at birthday parties, and keeping warm and toasty in the hoodies of their human friends. Once they're ready for adoption, we’ll work with a trusted shelter partner to find their forever homes -- stay tuned!
