I love this picture.?My husband took it last week at our ranch in Oklahoma and I continue to be in awe of the beauty captured in this photo. As odd as it may sound, this picture reminds me of the power of teamwork.?Each piece of this picture – the sun, the sky, the clouds, the grass, the trees are all great on their own at any time of day.?Yet when each of these pieces of this picture converge together, the outcome is breathtaking.? In a similar fashion, the talent within an organization can be quite beneficial individually.?However, when the collective talent of a company comes together in a way that maximizes and complements the individual talents of those on the team, the outcome can be more than anyone anticipated! **Spoiler alert – this was not the picture I had hoped for. ** I was trying to get a good picture of a few of our calves to show how cute they are.???As you can see, I captured only part of one calf’s face, the mouth is open on another calf, the tongue is out on yet another calf and a couple of cows (not calves) photo bombed the whole thing.?This was not the picture I was trying to get…at least, not initially.? My first interpretation of this picture is the comparison between trying to take pictures of calves and trying to take pictures of toddlers.?It’s rare to get toddlers to cooperate for a photo and the outcome is often hilarious.?Yet as I think about this further, this picture demonstrates the uniqueness of the calves – serious, silly, bold, shy, adventurous, curious, interesting – as it does toddlers.?And as it does with the people we work with and the people we lead.? How often do we as leaders photo-bomb our teams??How often do we as leaders fail to see what is unique about everyone on our team??How often do we fail to acknowledge what makes us truly unique from one another??Do we embrace what makes each other unique or, do we, like me – try to get the perfect picture with everyone “looking” the same? I’ve changed my mind about this picture.?It is exactly the picture I had hoped for.?I just didn’t know it until now.?
