  • Come see us at BOULDER COUNTY NATURE ASSOCIATION's Annual EcoSymposium on March 15th at CU Boulder's East Campus. This year's theme is Restorative Relationships: Sustainable Responses to Ecological Challenge. Get your ticket here! https://lnkd.in/gpHrq2Mc What have we learned from research and practical projects that respond to environmental threats in a restorative framework? How might such efforts lead to managing public lands in more sustainable ways, and what more do we need to know? This symposium will feature a variety of approaches to restoration ecology on diverse landscapes, such as re-wetting grasslands, restoring overgrazed agricultural lands, mitigating wildfire risks, and managing invasive plants without herbicides.

  • Reminder to sign up for our webinar that's all about Native Plants in Permaculture next week with speaker Amy Scanes-Wolfe! If you’re curious to learn even more about how to garden and grow food in a way that supports people and planet alike, The Boulder Permaculture Design Course is open for registration: https://boulderpdc.com/

Join PPAN on February 27th at 12pm via Zoom for our Native Plants in Permaculture Webinar! Permaculture is a design methodology that works with nature to create resilient systems, from gardens and farms to entire communities. Our speaker Amy Scanes-Wolfe will explore how native plants fit into the permaculture framework. What does it really mean for a plant to be “native”? Which native plants play key roles in forest gardens and other diverse plantings? And which native plants can also be tasty, useful food crops? Be sure to register using the event link!

  • Greetings, friends. In response to the pace, breadth, and gravity of changes taking place in the world right now, we here at PPAN are asking ourselves these essential questions: How can we help? How can our contributions have the biggest impact? How can we sustain ourselves and our communities? My own answer came from one of my kiddos:?"Plants for the win, mom."?#plantsftw????? I love his levity, but I also took the quip entirely seriously. PPAN's?mission?is to create thriving, healthy communities for both people and pollinators, but our?methodology?relies on—you guessed it—plants! Importantly, plants are for?everyone, and plants help take care of everyone. Plants feed us, cool us, heal us, provide shelter, offer comfort and joy, and of course, create habitat for the pollinators and other creatures whom we need and love! As Robin Wall Kimmerer advises us in her comments on the practice of honorable harvest, "Know the ways of the ones who take care of you, so that you may take care of them." Follow the link for many educational opportunities to engage with plants in the coming month! Warmly, Emily & the PPAN Team https://conta.cc/3ELlpKt

  • Action Alert ?? ?? We Have a Chance to Protect Monarchs! We must act for monarchs now. Volunteer counters recorded the second-lowest population ever in California this winter, but there is hope! ?? The U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service has proposed to list the monarch butterfly as a threatened species under the U.S. Endangered Species Act, but they need to hear from *all of us* in order to act on this proposal. Add your name to a sign on letter from Xerces Society for Invertebrate Conservation using this link. ?? https://lnkd.in/gittfXrN

  • Action Alert ?? ?? Speak Up to Prevent Federal Pesticide Protection Rollbacks by Feb 20th The EPA will soon decide whether to block hundreds of state and local pesticide laws, leaving schools, parks, playgrounds and communities vulnerable. This includes laws designed to protect children and notify parents when toxic pesticides will be sprayed near schools. We are sharing our colleagues' action alert and resources from the Environmental Working Group and urging everyone to submit comments to the EPA before February 20th using this link. ?? https://lnkd.in/gY2bSsHH Photo from the Xerces Society, Praxis Eco Pest Control

  • Action Alert ?? ?? 'Sudden and Severe' Colony Losses Reported - Survey for Beekeepers The American Beekeeping Federation has stated that overwintering losses added to losses since last June amount to 70-100% for some beekeepers this year. They noted that the losses were often sudden, and not due to lack of honey stores. If you are a beekeeper who has experienced losses, please fill out the collaborative survey linked here. ?? https://lnkd.in/gZGwHTps The more responses they get, the more likely true causes will be identified.
