Last week, SLAM students enjoyed a masterclass presented by D-Composed, the Chicago-based chamber music collective that celebrates Black creativity and culture through the music of Black composers. The quartet, made up of Khelsey Zarraga, Anya Brumfield, Wilfred Farquharson, and Lindsey Sharpe, performed a short program of music by Black composers, including Joseph Bologne's String Quartet. Afterwards, the musicians sat side by side with the SLAM ensemble and helped coach Bologne's Overture during rehearsal with some helpful tips about fingerings, bow strokes, and intonation. Thank you, D-Composed, for working with our students and elevating the music of Black composers! Kori Coleman #BlackComposers #BlackCreativity #ChamberMusic

Transforming lives through high-quality, tuition-free music education.
关于我们
The People's Music School is the only completely tuition-free music school in Chicago, and the oldest in the United States. The school was founded in 1976 by Dr. Rita Simó, an accomplished pianist from the Dominican Republic who believed that all children should have access to music education, regardless of their family's socioeconomic status. Today we serve over 1,600 students in the Chicagoland metropolitan area and beyond. Through intensive instruction and performance our students learn more than music. They grow socially, emotionally and intellectually, and develop a foundation of responsibility, self-esteem and purpose. We believe music is transformative and empowers the lives of youth, families and communities.

I'm always in awe of our student leaders at The People's Music School, and these moments at the CSO Instrument Petting Zoo are my absolute favorite from the SLAM Program! ??? Huge shoutout to Jonathan McCormick and Katie Eaton for making this experience possible! Seeing our SLAM students guide young children through their first musical moments—just like they once experienced themselves—is truly inspiring. Thank you to the Chicago Symphony Orchestra for hosting these wonderful events!
We're forever inspired by our student leaders who share their love of music with the next generation. ?? ?? 11 students at The People's Music School recently had the opportunity to participate in the Chicago Symphony Orchestra Instrument "Petting Zoo," where young children get the unique opportunity to try out all kinds of musical instruments, from strings, to brass, to boomwhackers. SLAM Program Associate Alejandra Aquino remarked what a special experience it was to see TPMS musicians interact with the children whose shoes they were once in: "From guiding children through their first notes to showcasing their own instruments, our students embraced this experience with enthusiasm and heart." #MusicForAll #LeadershipThroughMusic #CSOPettingZoo

When policies result in transformative opportunities for talented young people being actively revoked, we should all be crystal clear on what we stand for, its practical impact on our future leaders and artists, and what we are prepared to do in service of our values. Bravo to Stanford Thompson, Equity Arc, Charles Grode, the courageous veteran musicians who worked to amend the administration's harmful actions, and 60 MINUTES for telling this important story. The People's Music School is proud to create opportunities for young people who are otherwise systematically denied access to music education. I am so glad that these particular young people were granted access to this opportunity when adults around them stepped in with courage and conviction.
Setbacks can either close doors or open new ones. When the Trump Administration canceled the Equity Arc Wind Symphony collaboration with the “President’s Own” U.S. Marine Band, we didn’t let that moment define us. Instead, we doubled down on our mission—creating new opportunities for our young musicians to learn, grow, and shine. On a week's notice, we brought these incredible students to Washington, D.C., where they collaborated with veteran musicians from the city's premiere military bands (including the Marine Band) and took the stage at Strathmore for a performance that embodied resilience, excellence, and the power of community. This Sunday, CBS 60 Minutes will feature this inspiring journey—highlighting the dedication of these young musicians, the mentors who lifted them up, and the belief that music transcends politics and obstacles. The full performance will also be made available through CBS' website. https://lnkd.in/ec825gyy

Happy 49th birthday to The People's Music School! ?? ?? On this day in 1976, Julliard-trained pianist Dr. Rita Simó opened the “Music Center of the People” on North Sheridan Road in Chicago’s Uptown neighborhood with a single piano and a determination to make music education accessible to all. By the end of the day, 45 students had signed up for music lessons, and Rita had started something that would change the way we learn and appreciate music. We’re grateful each and every day for our community that carries on Rita’s legacy of free music education in Chicago. We invite you to celebrate with us by continuing your support and making a gift in honor of The People’s Music School’s 49th birthday!
