关于我们
Pennsylvania Sea Grant serves as a bridge between science and the people who manage, conserve, and enjoy Pennsylvania’s waterways and lakes. We are one of 34 National Sea Grant College programs, which are federal and university partnerships located in Great Lakes and coastal states. With support from the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Penn State University, and private and public grants, Pennsylvania Sea Grant conducts integrated research, outreach, education, and communications programs in the Lake Erie watershed, and in the Delaware and Susquehanna River Basins. Pennsylvania Sea Grant is one of 34 programs of the National Sea Grant College Program, whose mission is to enhance the practical use and conservation of natural resources in order to create a sustainable economy and environment. Sea Grant supports coastal and Great Lakes watersheds and communities through research, extension, and education programming. The Pennsylvania Sea Grant team of scientists, educators, and communicators builds bridges between science and people to promote the importance of maintaining sustainable coastal and river ecosystems for the health of local communities and families and to ensure a thriving economy. Pennsylvania Sea Grant’s work is supported by the National Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA), Penn State University, and through federal, state, and local funding.

PA Sea Grant is happy to share that a new resource is available for download - the Choose Native Guide Promotes Using Native Species in Landscaping & Water Gardening and highlights commonly used invasives species and provides native alternatives. Download it today -https://lnkd.in/enbEtKVN The 208-page guide serves as a portable resource to assist professional landscapers, homeowners, and garden enthusiasts in selecting native species over non-native, ornamental, or even invasive species for landscaping, gardens, and water gardens. The guide is available in English and Spanish and is the result of a collaborative effort with Penn State Extension, with funding by the Richard King Mellon Foundation and the Great Lakes Commission. Whether constructing a garden from scratch, converting an existing garden, or completely transforming an unwieldy non-native area into a native garden, choosing the right native species for the space is a critical step. Incorporating native species will benefit wildlife while also providing the visual appeal that every gardener desires. The guide profiles non-native species commonly found at garden centers in Pennsylvania and nearby states. For each non-native species, there are generally two native alternatives featured. These native species are considered ‘top picks’ by the Choose Native team, meaning that they are the best native replacement in terms of size, color, performance, and other factors. To help in choosing the right native species for the right space, each native species description includes details such as the growth height, soil and sun requirements, hardiness zones, and tolerances. In some cases, the descriptions also include unfavorable or challenging aspects to consider, such as plant spread, or even the potential harm to humans or animals. The guide is available for download online at https://lnkd.in/enbEtKVN.

NEW! StoryMap Highlights the Lake Erie Shipboard Science Journey! Check it out online at https://lnkd.in/e3deSdwJ This summer fifteen educators from across the Great Lakes states joined Sea Grant educators from the Center for Great Lakes Literacy (CGLL) and Great Lakes scientists for a week-long Shipboard Science Workshop (SSW) on Lake Erie. The opportunity, which took place aboard the EPA’s research vessel (R/V), Lake Guardian, launched July 7 from Cleveland, Ohio. Throughout the week, participants recorded their experience via photos and commentary, which have been compiled into a StoryMap, available online.
