46 million Americans struggle with substance-use disorder. It’s time for bosses to stop ignoring them This piece from Erika Fry in Fortune today talks about supporting a "recovery-friendly" workplace. From the article: "And despite long-held stereotypes of “addicts” as derelict and nonfunctioning, the majority of the adult population with an addiction—more than 60%, according to the NSDUH—are employed. An analysis of NSDUH data from 2012-2018 estimated that approximately 1 in 11 American workers had a substance use disorder in the previous year (see chart for rates by occupation). Statistically it’s clear that all Americans know many people struggling with addiction—family, friends, and colleagues—and yet it remains unthinkable in most American workplaces for an employee or job-seeker to admit to substance-use disorder, past or present." We know the human, familial, societal and economic costs of addiction are enormous and, as employers, we have the opportunity to be meaningful change agents in the way we think about and support employees in recovery. The article points out some interventions such as recovery-focused employee support networks/ERGs and employment models for people who have substance use disorders. https://lnkd.in/eG-T6xXz
