Thanks to the community-minded work of Penn State College of Medicine University Park medical students, several hospitalized patients at Mount Nittany Medical Center were able to cast emergency absentee ballots on Election Day from their bedside. In emergency situations, such as hospitalizations, voters can request an emergency absentee ballot form and designate an agent for delivery. Students assisted patients by delivering the ballots to be completed by the voter and then securely transporting to the courthouse. By organizing the collection and delivery of emergency absentee ballots, they ensured that patients at Mount Nittany Medical Center could still exercise their right to vote, despite unexpected health challenges.

According to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, rural Americans face more health disparities than their urban counterparts and are more likely to suffer from things like heart disease, stroke, cancer and chronic illness. The newly launched Penn State College of Medicine partnership-based center, the Center for Advancing Health Equity in Rural and Underserved Communities (CAHE-RUC), will address health disparities in Pennsylvania and beyond. CAHE-RUC is working with rural partners to address low vaccine and low health screening rates while expanding programs for health education, medical training and researcher access. For the past decade, our sports medicine team has proudly supported the Marine Corps Marathon in Washington, D.C., covering the medical tent at mile marker 21! ??♂??? This year, four sports medicine attending faculty members and two sports medicine fellows provided on-the-ground medical support, gaining hands-on experience and serving runners at one of the nation’s premier marathons.
