Penn-Mar Human Services is always seeking new opportunities to promote equity and inclusion. In this effort, we working with the Baltimore County Public Library Hereford Branch to launch a two-week pilot program, helping people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) gain essential digital skills. Led by Penn-Mar’s amazing Enabling Technology Manager, Allis Kensing, participants learn computer basics, email use, and safe social media practices, empowering them with the tools for greater independence and digital expertise and ability to navigate the digital world as freely as everyone else. The success of this pilot program has paved the way for a broader curriculum to reach even more people gain digital independence! The Baltimore Banner's Pamela Wood recently interviewed Gregory Miller, CEO of Penn-Mar Human Services, for an article discussing Gov. Wes Moore's potential state budget cuts to Maryland's Low Intensity Support Services (LISS) program. LISS plays a crucial role in providing support to thousands of Marylanders with disabilities who would otherwise be left without state assistance. If these services are cut, many individuals will lose the support they rely on. Make your voice heard by contacting your local state representative and urging them to keep LISS funding intact. Governor Moore’s recently proposed FY 26 budget includes a $457,000,000 (state and federal) cut that would severely impact individuals with Intellectual and Developmental Disabilities (IDD) and the providers who support them. Tomorrow, advocates for the IDD community, along with human services organizations, will gather both in Annapolis and online to urge lawmakers to reconsider these harmful cuts. If you’d like to attend virtually and make sure your voice is heard, please email Penn-Mar's Tina Chan Sweenie at [email protected] to sign up. #pennmar #humanservices #budgetcuts #disabilityadvocate #disabilitynonprofit #nonprofit #disabilitysupport

Contact your state representative and let them know how these cuts could deeply impact Maryland's intellectual and developmental disability (IDD) community! Not sure who to call? Since 1981, Penn-Mar has worked tirelessly to provide greater and greater support for the Intellectual and Developmental Disabled (IDD) community. And along the way, seven U.S. Presidents have done their part to create greater opportunities for empowerment, independence, and equity. In his latest blog post, Penn-Mar CEO Greg Miller reflects on his 37 years with the organization and 13 as CEO. As he shares, there have been significant strides in laws, opportunities, and acceptance for people with disabilities. While these changes have been monumental, the work is far from over and we remain dedicated to paving the way forward, ensuring that the individuals we support continue to have increased opportunities to reach their personal best on their own unique journeys. Since I joined Penn-Mar Human Services in 1988, seven U.S. Presidents have been in office, ushering in sweeping changes to our laws- including the ones that support people with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDD) and their families. As President Trump wraps up his first week in office, I took a moment to reflect on all the changes that have been made by many of these leaders to ensure the IDD community is treated with dignity and empowerment. Penn-Mar's mission is to do everything we can to ensure that our nation continues to provide support for every American. And as always, there is never a shortage of work to be done. “My faith tells me that you need to help people.” A career at Penn-Mar is more than just a job; it’s a mission that resonates deeply with those who join. Many, like former Penn-Mar DSP Katrina Copper, often return even after retiring. At age 60, Katrina was seeking a new direction, and after her sister’s suggestion, she joined Penn-Mar’s Day Program as a DSP. Even after her retirement, Katrina’s dedication to the people we support and to Penn-Mar’s mission continues to draw her back as a volunteer. As we exit the holidays, we're taking a moment to highlight some amazing Direct Support Professionals (DSP) who made the season so special for those we support. DSPs like Christal Lovelist. As a member of Penn-Mar's Holiday Committee, Christal assisted with everything from gift purchases and wrapping, to baking cookies and even making homemade holiday cards! In just over a year as a DSP, Christal has made a massive impact on her team and the 80 individuals she supports in our Day Program. Please take a minute to read more about her and the work she did to ensure everyone had a joyous season: https://lnkd.in/eFhnbCHs #pennmar #humanservices #nonprofitcareer #nonprofitjob #dreamjob #nonprofitemployment #disabilitysupport
