No one ever sat me down and explained menstrual cycles... Did they for you? For most of us, it was a here’s a pad, good luck situation. Maybe a weirdly outdated school video. Maybe whispers from friends in the bathroom. And if we did get “education,” let’s be honest—it was probably awkward, surface-level, outdated and barely scratched the surface of what we actually needed to know. So we just… figured it out. Except we didn’t. Because no one told us: ?? Your first few years of menstruating don’t define your menstrual cycles forever—your body is still calibrating. ?? Your hormones shift throughout the month—so yeah, you feel different in week one vs. week three. ?? Menstrual cycles aren’t just about reproduction—they affect energy, metabolism, mood, and overall health. Yet most of us enter this experience completely unprepared—not because we weren’t paying attention, but because no one thought to teach us. A global report found that only 2 out of 5 schools worldwide provide menstrual health education. And honestly? That number isn’t shocking—it explains a lot. This is why so many women feel disconnected from their own bodies. Because we were taught to manage menstrual cycles, not understand them. This Ovarian Cancer Awareness Month, get to know the key signs and symptoms to look out for: - Increased abdominal size and persistent bloating (not bloating that comes and goes) - Persistent pelvic and abdominal pain - Difficulty eating and feeling full quickly, or feeling nauseous - Unexplained change in bowel habits - Urinating (weeing) more frequently. If you have spotted any of the above symptoms, do call your GP. It is probably something less serious than cancer but always worth getting checked, just in case. The symptoms of ovarian cancer are often misdiagnosed as IBS or constipation, if you have seen/spoken to your GP three times about persistent bloating, and it hasn't gone away, insist on a referral to a gynaecologist.
