Last month, Leonard Davis Institute of Health Economics (Penn LDI) and the Wharton Healthcare Analytics Lab gathered national experts for a conference exploring the use of large language models to advance health care. Gary Weissman, a faculty advisor for CHTI's Core for Precision Resource Utilization, moderated a panel on how federal regulations relate to #LLMs. He noted the lack of evidence around actual and potential harms around the use of AI systems in the health care space. Accelerating ideas to transform health care
关于我们
The Center for Health Care Transformation and Innovation (CHTI) at Penn Medicine facilitates the rapid, disciplined development, testing, and implementation of new strategies to reimagine health care delivery for dramatically better patient outcomes, value, and experience. CHTI comprises six coordinated teams – the Center for Insights to Outcomes, the Center for Health Justice, the Nudge Unit, Way to Health, and the Center for Precision Resource Utilization. We focus our work in four areas: 1. Improving health and health care: Our fundamental objective is to improve the health, health care, and experience of patients, clinicians, and populations. We aim to see past health care’s conventional models and redesign care effectively, economically, equitably, and reproducibly. 2. Increasing health equity: As we strive to create transformational change in health and health care, we are committed to reducing inequity for historically marginalized, disenfranchised, and oppressed populations and combating forces that create inequities. 3. Enabling a culture of innovation at Penn Medicine: Every health care transformation depends on the people behind it. We aim to identify, engage, and retain exceptional clinical partners, support their development, eliminate their burdens, and celebrate their success. We are a center for - not of - innovation. 4. Driving innovation in the larger health care ecosystem: An innovation center's purpose is to support innovation within an organization. The purpose of a leading innovation center is to advance the field and enable other institutions to follow. We aim to create and disseminate new approaches and knowledge to facilitate the innovation of others. Visit our website and follow us on Twitter (@PM_Innovation) to learn more.

Last month, the Center for Health Incentives and Behavioral Economics gathered for the annual Roybal Retreat. Many CHTI-ers were in attendance to present research and to meet and learn from CHIBE affiliates. (The Nudge Unit, Way to Health, and the Population Health Lab are all among CHIBE's "family of programs.") Along with boosting clinical measures, some quality improvement efforts yield economic benefits, according to a panel session at the American College of Surgeons Clinical Congress last month. Rachel Kelz, director of CHTI's Core for Precision Resource Utilization (CPRU), who served on the panel, spoke about leveraging AI to achieve this double enhancement. “We have to find a way to use technology to extend ourselves beyond what we are being asked to do,” Kelz said. She shared examples from the CPRU portfolio including ambient listening technology for creating clinical notes and operating room schedule optimization. We were tickled at author Lisa Scottoline's humorous account of her colonoscopy experience, particularly "Bum Bot" – her nickname for our text message navigation program, Coloprep – in her latest blog post. Bum Bot would text me helpful directions every day, like: “Lisa, don’t forget to purchase your prep supplies!” Thanks for the reminder, Bum Bot! Next text, “Good morning, Lisa! Let’s take a look at your diet in preparation for your colonoscopy!” Another great idea! Then, “Lisa, Have you made arrangements for a ride home? Let us know!” Why, no, thanks for asking, Bum Bot! I began to look forward to his texts. Then: “Hi Lisa, remember that you really want to avoid high fiber foods! Here’s a short list of foods to avoid and foods to eat!” At this point I fell in love with Bum Bot.
