Discover the Microbes Within! The Wolbachia Project (https://lnkd.in/e8zz4gcW), Directed by Sarah Bordenstein, is enhancing #scientific #education across the globe ??. Check out this short video on the impact the #Wolbachia Project is having in a high school in Michigan! In this collaboration, they expanded the Wolbachia Project to include the #biodiversity of bug splatter (their idea) ??. Students had a lot of fun collecting #insects from faculty cars?and we were able to obtain high-quality sequences for about 85 samples. Next they will be using NCBI and applying #phylogenetics to determine the identity and relatedness?of their bugs. https://lnkd.in/d64wkVYu Penn State Biology, Penn State University, Penn State Research, Huck Institutes of the Life Sciences #ScienceEducation #workforcedevelopment #biotechnology #entomology #microbiology #microbiome #highschool #research

As the transition to renewable energy accelerates, energy storage solutions are critical to ensuring a reliable power grid. Penn State University researchers have found a way to improve the efficiency of compressed-air energy storage (CAES) by utilizing natural geothermal heat in depleted oil and gas wells. By repurposing existing wells, this approach not only boosts efficiency by 9.5% but also reduces upfront costs, making CAES more economically viable. This could be a game-changer for integrating wind and solar energy into the grid while also addressing environmental concerns related to abandoned wells.
