Three outstanding Penn State University graduate students took top honors in the 2025 Three Minute Thesis (3MT) competition, hosted by the J. Jeffrey and Ann Marie Fox Graduate School at Penn State. Tricia Hart, PhD, MS, RD, CSCS, now a postdoctoral researcher, earned first place for her research showing how replacing snacks with pecans can reduce LDL cholesterol and potentially prevent thousands of heart disease deaths each year. Adam Smerigan, a doctoral candidate in chemical engineering, received second place for his work using peptides to recover rare earth elements from fertilizer waste. Patrick Sarpong, a doctoral candidate in energy and mineral engineering, earned the People’s Choice Award for his innovative lithium extraction method from battery waste using bioleaching. These scholars exemplify the power of research to address real-world challenges — from renewable energy to public health. How can screen time affect toddler empathy? Recent Penn State World Campus graduate Jillian Lesikar explored that question through the Online Students of Psychology Research Laboratory — one of many research opportunities available to Penn State’s online learners. Supported by an Erickson Discovery Grant and guided by faculty mentor Dr. Anthony Nelson, Lesikar designed and led a study on toddler behavior, gaining valuable experience that shaped her decision to pursue clinical research and medical school. Her work is part of a growing number of student-led projects at the lab addressing real-world challenges — from mindfulness in athletics to autism and sexual health. Military-connected students often face academic disruption due to frequent moves and varying state policies. New research from Penn State University’s Clearinghouse for Military Family Readiness shows that key initiatives—such as advance enrollment, the Interstate Compact, the military student identifier, and the Purple Star Schools Program—are making a positive impact, but inconsistent implementation and limited awareness remain major barriers. Continued commitment to communication and policy alignment could help improve educational success and family well-being. Interested in partnering with Penn State Research?
