Built in 1913, the Broadway Bridge was Portland’s first bascule bridge and remains the longest span of its kind in the world. While its name comes from the street it carries, at the time of construction, "Broadway" only existed east of the river. The west side was called 7th Avenue—until the bridge united them under one name. Fast forward to 2017: After decades of service, the Rall wheels—a critical part of the bridge’s bascule mechanism—had worn down, becoming more conical than round, with visible cracks forming. The decision was made to replace all four wheels to keep this historic structure in operation. This is where Peninsula Iron Works, a flagship brand of TerraSource Global, stepped in. With forged metal production scarce west of the Mississippi, Peninsula Iron Works was contracted to produce new wheel forgings—each one an 88,000-pound, eight-foot-diameter engineering feat.
