Currently, there are fewer than 10,000 African Penguin breeding pairs in the wild. They have lost nearly 99% of their historical population and could be functionally extinct by 2035. Scientists and organizations have been working together to protect the wild penguins including our friends at African Penguin SAFE and the African Penguin Nest Project. A new study published this month studies the impacts of artificial nests on African Penguin conservation. The big question is- have the artificial nests made a difference? According to research published October 16th in Ecological Solutions and Evidence by scientists Pichegru et al. Artificial nests outperformed natural nests and successfully increased the breeding output of African penguins by 16.5%. What does this mean? Nest boxes work, but it still isn't enough to protect African Penguins, they still need broader measures in place to protect their forage fish prey.
