Can listening to audiobooks help to #GrowAGenerationOfReaders?? Jason Vit, our Assistant Director of Place-Based Working, joined Nick Ferrari on LBC this morning to discuss just that. When children enjoy reading, it can benefit all areas of their lives, boosting their confidence, wellbeing, academic performance and life chances. Yet just a third (34.6%) say they enjoy reading in their free time – the lowest levels we’ve recorded in 19 years. The solution? Giving children and young people more opportunities to discover the joy and purpose of reading in ways that matter to them. This includes tapping into their interests, giving them agency over the reading they do in their free time and helping them explore different reading materials and formats – including audio. Our latest research shows that more children are enjoying listening to audio than reading, and that audiobooks can spark children’s interest in reading books and support their reading enjoyment. By working together with schools, libraries and partners, we can leverage this enthusiasm for audio to better support children’s reading. That’s why initiatives like 'Kids Who Read Succeed with Nick Ferrari' are so important. Every week until mid-March, children and families can discover a different Beatrix Potter story brought to life by fantastic storytellers, capturing children’s imaginations and unlocking an enjoyment of stories which could be the first step on their journey to becoming a reader. This month we're celebrating Charlotte Gill, who was shortlisted in the 2024 Cover Design Award Non-Fiction category, where she redesigned the cover of ‘Atomic Habits’, by James Clear. ? Charlotte is a designer and illustrator from Birmingham ?? 'Illustration has always been my most natural outlet of expression. Capturing complex ideas and emotions in this format is empowering; my work aims to connect with you and tell a story you can feel. My process involves a lot of experimentation with layers, texture and mixed media to guide an interest in the details that make up the bigger picture. This travels to my graphic design work also, where I like to incorporate these materials and explore imagery and illustration in a fluid way.'
