PEN America condemns the gutting of the Department of Education staff and its abrupt closures of offices on Wednesday. Taken together with other actions by the Trump Administration to censor curricula, ban books and limit gender and DEI programs, such steps undercut America’s commitment to education, critical inquiry and free speech. We call on Congress to intervene to protect education for all. https://lnkd.in/ec2P96He

Hong Kong's national security trial of Jimmy Lai is a stark example of silencing critical voices. "The ordinary actions of a media owner and writer are being treated as crimes," his lawyer said on behalf of @peninternational. We join PEN International in calling for Jimmy Lai's immediate release, along with all those arbitrarily detained for their peaceful expression, and for the repeal of Hong Kong's draconian national security law. #FreeJimmyLai Read their full statement: https://lnkd.in/etHbzXHW

When Sarah and Ian Hoffman's son was six, he was assaulted in the boy's bathroom because another child saw his long hair and pink Crocs and decided he was a girl. They wrote "Jacob's Room to Choose" -- one of the books named in a case before the Supreme Court -- to show kids that everyone should be able to use the bathroom safely. https://lnkd.in/eHzJxGMd

Today marks 4 years since Ukrainian journalist and PEN/Barbey #FreedomToWrite Award honoree Vladyslav Yesypenko was arrested and detained in Russian-occupied Crimea. PEN America calls for Yesypenko’s immediate and unconditional release. #FreeVlad Yesypenko’s work focused on life under Russian occupation. Days before his arrest, he collected footage of Crimean residents’ perspectives and covered an event for Ukrainian poet Taras Shevchenko.
