Yesterday, Red Cat Holdings announced it had been selected as the winner of the U.S. Army’s Short Range Reconnaissance (SRR) Program of Record; this is a massive win for Red Cat, George Matus, Red Cat employees, the United States of America, and Utah. Congratulations to the entire Red Cat Team for the achievement. I want to share my experience with one of the greatest entrepreneurs I have ever been able to work with, George Matus Jr. I met George after he won the Thiel Fellowship going into his senior year of High School. He was just starting Teal Drones (FKA iDrone); from the moment I met George I knew I wanted to work with him for the rest of my life. Pelion Venture Partners led the Teal Drones Seed round and had George incubate the Teal out of the Pelion office. I joined Teal’s Board of Directors and George quickly became like a brother to me. I saw him work tirelessly trying to make his vision of Teal come to life. He hired some great people (especially, Billy McGuire) along the way to help him build. Teal Drones should have died at least two dozen times from 2016 to 2021 but every time they were left for dead, George kept Teal alive. When Teal was one of 8 companies to get into DIU’s SRR program, George made to decision to bet the company on becoming a Defense Tech Company. He had the foresight to know that they could help him accomplish his vision when Red Cat wanted to acquire Teal. Pelion is lucky to be an investor in Red Cat. Today, George became the youngest person ever to build a product that has been selected as a Program of Record for the United States Military.
