?? Pediatric Moonshot Monday with Dr. Timothy Chou and Dr. Wyman Lai: If you build the roads, I'll find the cars. ????? With the F1 season in full throttle, it’s a reminder that speed and precision matter—not just on the track, but in healthcare innovation as well. Just like a well-tuned race car, AI-driven medical advancements can accelerate access to life-saving care, ensuring no patient is left behind. “We’re talking about working in low-middle-income countries, and it's correctly been pointed out by many people that there are a lot of rural areas in the United States and Canada that don't have access to primary care or subspecialty care. You know, this concept that you bring up is very important—it's not just charity abroad. It's making sure that the resources that we have in the United States and Canada are available to all the citizens here.” ?? Listening to Dr. Wyman Lai on The Pediatric Moonshot Podcast hits differently when you’ve had the privilege of working alongside him! His passion for pediatric cardiology, deep curiosity, and forward-thinking approach to AI in medicine are seriously inspiring. One of my favorite things about him? The way he asks questions. The kind that make you pause, think deeper, and realize you’re exactly where you’re meant to be. It’s refreshing (and fun!) to learn from someone who not only excels in medicine but also brings an MPH perspective into the mix—bridging public health and cutting-edge cardiology. Dr. Lai, formerly the Co-Medical Director at CHOC Children's, took a step back from leadership to dedicate more time to advancing AI and medicine. His insights on bridging the healthcare gap—both globally and in underserved rural communities within the U.S. and Canada—highlight an urgent need for equitable healthcare access. ???Grateful Takeaways from this episode: ???Medicine is about collaboration. In pediatric cardiology, rare diseases require shared knowledge, and AI can help scale that. ???Global health starts at home. Dr. Lai reminds us that improving access to specialty care isn’t just a challenge abroad—it’s a challenge right here in rural America. ???AI is not about replacing doctors, but empowering them. By using AI to process vast amounts of medical data, we can enhance diagnosis, expand access to care, and ultimately save more lives. It is such a privilege and inspiring to learn from clinicians like Dr. Lai who combine innovation with compassion to build a more equitable future in healthcare. ?? #PediatricCardiology #HealthcareInnovation #AIinMedicine #GlobalHealth #MedicalEducation #EquityInHealthcare

We say children are our future - do we invest that way?
Investment in pediatric health technology is a problem - but how big of a problem? We've now quantified it. Technologies serving solely pediatric patients received 0.6% of the seed funding invested in US-based health tech companies over a 3 year period. The data was slightly better (7.7% of seed funding) for companies serving both adult and pediatric populations. The full publication can be found here:

? When Purpose Finds You ?? Pediatric Moonshot Monday: It Always Takes One with Annamarie Saarinen and Dr. Timothy Chou I truly believe that when we listen closely, the most difficult moments in life guide us toward our greatest purpose. "You have to be thick-skinned, listen more than you speak, and not be afraid to push forward—even when the system says no." Working in pediatric healthcare—whether in the hospital, teaching, or researching solutions—I constantly think about HOW we can do better for children. That’s why AnneMarie Saarinen’s story struck a deep chord with me and was so inspiring. When her daughter, Eve was born with a critical congenital heart defect, she didn’t just accept the system as it was—she changed it. She didn’t wait for permission—she literally made it happen. Because of her work: ?? 4 million newborns a year are now screened for heart defects. ?? She helped make pulse oximetry screening a national standard in the U.S-WOW. ?? She founded Bloom Standard, creating an AI-driven, automated ultrasound solution for low-resource settings—because every tiny human deserves access to life-saving technology. I think about these questions daily: ?? How many preventable conditions go undetected simply because of lack of access? ?? How many lives could we change if we trusted our calling and took action—no matter how small? ?? Grateful Takeaways: ???When you see a gap, you might be the one meant to fill it. ???Advocacy, innovation, and persistence are the real game changers. ???Sometimes, you don’t need all the answers—you just need to start. If you feel called to something bigger, trust that feeling. The challenges are there to guide you to your greatest work.
