Did you know that SB365 gave trial courts new powers? ???? ?? The law took effect in 2024 and allows trial courts to permit litigation to continue after a motion to compel arbitration is denied. As a result, employers could find themselves having to navigate an appeal while simultaneously defending against litigation. ?? In honor of #InternationalWomensDay, we’re shining a spotlight on the inspiring journey of Meline H. Sirounian. Here's a closer look at her story: “Growing up, I was always drawn to the ideas of right and wrong, and I thought that becoming a lawyer would be my way to uphold justice. 30 years in, I’m proud of the work I’ve done. While I may not have one big standout accomplishment, am proud of the fact that I have represented some great clients over the course of many years and have their trust. I am also proud of building a lot of good relationships in the workers’ compensation community that have helped me achieve good results for my clients. When I initially began going to court the ratio of men and women was different than it is today. Men were the majority and particularly older men who viewed women very differently. One of my earliest memories as a new lawyer was meeting an older gentleman in court who snapped his fingers in my face and told me to pick up the files (at that time there were physical files in the courtroom) and to follow him so that I could make him copies of minutes. The behavior was demeaning and dismissive and normalized. Today I feel our community has changed for the better. Of course there are more women, but I also feel my male colleagues are more considerate, aware, and respectful. My biggest mentor as a practicing lawyer was Elliot Borska who hired me and whom I worked so closely with for 17 years. I was able to watch him be aggressive on his file handling, while also garnering a good reputation with the applicant bar. I feel this was a great balance and I hope I have tried to do the same. In regard to my time as partner and working with clients, Barry Pearlman has been an excellent mentor, and I hope to mirror his efforts as I continue to work and learn.” Here’s to all the incredible women out there! Your journey is celebrated today and every day. #InternationalWomensDay #WomenInLaw #PBW

As PBW continues to celebrate Black History Month, it is essential to recognize the significant contributions of African Americans who have paved the way for future generations. One such individual is Justice Ketanji Brown Jackson, a trailblazing figure in the legal profession, who has made history by becoming the first Black woman to serve on the United States Supreme Court. Born on September 14, 1970, Justice Jackson has had a storied career marked by academic excellence, dedication to public service, and a commitment to promoting justice and equality. She earned her Bachelor's degree from Harvard University and later her law degree from Harvard Law School. Justice Jackson's professional journey began in the 1990s, when she served as a law clerk for several prominent judges, including Justice Stephen Breyer. She then became a counsel to the U.S. Sentencing Commission in 2003, where she played a crucial role in shaping the Commission's policies and guidelines. In 2005, Justice Jackson was an assistant federal public defender in Washington, D.C., where she handled cases before the United States Court of Appeals for the District of Columbia Circuit, winning several uncommon victories against the government that shortened or erased lengthy prison terms. On July 23, 2009, President Obama nominated Jackson as vice chair of the United States Sentencing Commission. She then went on to serve as a United States district judge for the District of Columbia and was ultimately elevated to the court of appeals. In 2022, Justice Jackson was nominated and confirmed to the U.S. Supreme Court, becoming the first Black woman and the first former federal public defender to serve on the Supreme Court. Her historic nomination and confirmation in 2022 marked a significant milestone in the fight for racial and gender equality in the United States. Today, Justice Jackson continues to serve as a U.S. Supreme Court Justice.
