Here are some takeaways: I was recently briefed re the sales & distribution of fentanyl on social media. A current California lawsuit: Parents of 60+ kids who died from fentanyl overdoses are suing Snapchat. For those who don’t know about this app; it’s the choice for people who want to maintain privacy, many of whom are teenagers. ? The app allows users to send text messages, pictures & videos that disappear once they’re opened. ? If someone takes a screenshot to preserve content, Snapchat notifies the sender. ? It’s used to send sexy pictures that only let the receiver see once and then are gone. Snapchat also has a location-sharing feature (Snap Map) and an algorithm that looks at what content you’re interested in & recommends new friends. All this is a dream come true for drug dealers looking for customers. The lawsuit purports the drugs that killed their children were purchased using Snapchat. In nearly all Snapchat fentanyl deaths, the victim believed they were buying Oxycontin, Percocet, Xanax, or some other prescription drug from a dealer they connected with through the app. Instead, the victims received look-alike pills laced with a lethal dose of fentanyl. There’s been a 350% increase in teen deaths over the past 3 years caused by fentanyl overdoses. ? It’s the largest killer of kids under 18. The families claim Snapchat should be held responsible for knowing about and/or allowing drug sales using their app. Snapchat claims protection from Section 230 of the Communications Decency Act, which allows companies to provide user content without liability as long as they didn’t edit or restrict it in any way.
