National States Geographic Information Council (NSGIC)'s Midyear Meeting is in full swing in Colorado Springs! I've had the great fortune of catching up in person with the wise and powerful Scottie Wall from the Commonwealth of Pennsylvania. She recently connected me with key stakeholders to Pennsylvania's lidar and #3DEP activity to discuss the impact this foundational data is driving in their beautiful state. Check out PA's revamped state lidar highlight in the storymap below!

“Where are we?” is one of my favorite in flight games to play. It's one of the reasons I always sit in the window seat! While I’m particularly good at this game south of the 40th parallel and west of the 100th meridian, outside the American South West I’m often left guessing. So, when we traveled from Sacramento, CA to Jacksonville, FL this weekend on a flight path just north of my birds eye geography jam I was stumped by an incredible natural and man made complex. When my daughter and I looked out the window a few hours into our flight I pointed out a massive canyon, large reservoir, and huge dam. My thoughts immediately went to the Grand Canyon, Lake Mead, and the Hoover Dam, but that could not be right, we were way too far north and east! Turns out, we were flying over the Flaming Gorge Dam and Reservoir, nestled along the Green River in northeastern Utah and southwestern Wyoming. This incredible site combines the forces of nature and human engineering: a towering 502-foot dam holding back 3.8 million acre-feet of water in a 91-mile-long reservoir. Surrounded by dramatic red-rock canyons and forested ridges, it's a playground for boaters, anglers, and outdoor enthusiasts. The crazy part is I had driven by this incredible site not once, but twice in the last three months. Both times heading east from Salt Lake City. The first to the south on US-40, the second to the north on I-80. But it’s just enough off the beaten path to go unnoticed from the ground. This stunning surprise from 35,000 feet speaks to the advantages of aerial data acquisition if you ask me ?? Here I've highlighted the reservoir within the surrounding turbo gradient in QGIS. See where the dam is? #3DEP #lidar #geography #windowseat #geospatialdata #aerialdata #aerial

When it comes to improving the efficiency of the federal government, it's important to distinguish between regulatory and operational agency activity. While I generally lean toward reducing government spending and centralization, some operational agency functions serve as a flywheel of value generation unmatched by private industry. Find out what I mean in my latest blog! https://lnkd.in/dAsdSbCw #DOGE #federalgovernment #efficiency #operations #regulatory

I'd like to discuss 3DEP lidar data with Randall Carlson and Graham Hancock. They regularly use 3DEP data to analyze evidence for the #YoungerDryasImpactTheory. Here are a couple of #3DEP derived images of regions they highlight. The first two are the Pacific North West featuring the Grand and Moses Coulees. These maps highlight elevation between 275-1500m. The second two include the region around Serpent Mound. They're where the Allegheny Plateau, Cumberland Plateau, and Central Lowlands meet. These color bands span 190-1200m. Can you see the evidence of the Scioto and Ohio Rivers breaching their channels in big ways? Better yet, can you help me connect with Randal or Graham to discuss the value of public elevation data? #3D #ancientapocalypse #fingerprintsofthegods

Pretty sweet how the state of modern computing makes it possible to visualize and manipulate massive lidar point clouds without downloading them, from my tiny laptop, in a campground in rural New Mexico, via satellite internet, all within seconds. #geospatialdata #starlink #lidar #3DEP #3D #geospatial

We didn’t start the fire… But it was burning while our wheels were turning. We were camping just north of Baker County, OR when the Durkee Fire erupted last Wednesday. It was the first and only cloudy day we saw throughout our 3 week stay outside La Grande, OR. We were hoping the dark storm clouds would drop even a little rain to moisturize the bone dry landscape, But instead of rain, dry lightning showered the dry hills of Eastern Oregon, sparking dozens of fires. We saw the smoke from one such fire from the kitchen window of my sister in law’s house, and learned of two more surrounding her brother’s house as he helped us set up our family DnD game. So far, his home, kids, and animals are safe.? Sunday was a travel day for my nomadic family, As we drove toward Idaho, the smoke from the Durkee fire inundated the Durkee Valley, providing a dark post apocalyptic backdrop to the monolithic Ash Grove Cement Plant. Now camped just southeast of Boise, the smoke from the Durkee and a dozen other fires still dominate our sky.? Yet, while it may be the largest fire in the country, the Durkee fire is not an unusual occurrence in the arid western United States. And although we must protect property and lives from the devastation such fires inflict, Fire is a necessary element in the western ecosystem, removing waste, adding nutrients to the soil, and providing essential opportunities for new growth. So, the question is not how can we prevent fires altogether, It’s how to enable the essential benefits while limiting the negative externalities emanating from their raw power. #durkeefire #nomads #dnd #wildfiremitigation #wildfires #smokeyskies
