关于我们
The private equity industry is massive, hugely influential, and playing a role in more and more aspects of life in the US and around the world. The industry manages nearly $7.5 trillion in assets and owns companies that employ more than 11 million American workers, plus millions more around the world. The industry touches a growing number of stakeholders, from workers and their unions, to communities and community groups, to those concerned about the environment. Private Equity Stakeholder Project is a non-profit organization whose mission is to identify, engage, and connect stakeholders affected by private equity with the goal of engaging investors and empowering communities, working families, and others impacted by private equity investments.

As a pre-Thanksgiving outbreak of E. coli linked to carrots has left one person dead and dozens more sickened, private equity-owned Grimmway Farms has come under scrutiny. Owned by Zionsville, Indiana-based private equity firm Teays River Investments, Grimmway Farms is one of the world’s largest carrot producers. In addition to the ongoing carrot debacle, the company has paid fines for multiple OSHA violations, including at least three involving worker deaths.

While profiting from dangerous fossil fuel emissions, private equity increasingly profits from climate disaster cleanup – since September 2023, private equity firms have acquired a stake in at least 49 disaster restoration companies.

Marc Rowan, CEO of private equity firm Apollo Global Management, is apparently a top contender for Secretary of the Treasury. Rowan’s supervision of hospital investments with poor quality ratings as well as concerning treatment of workers in his firm’s portfolio leaves much to be desired. Under Rowan’s leadership, Apollo’s investments have been scrutinized by lawmakers and regulators and introduced financial risks for the firm’s investors.

PESP Healthcare Director Mary Bugbee just presented at the 2024 Princeton Conference on private equity’s risks in the healthcare sector.
Thrilled to be invited to the 2024 Princeton Conference, a national platform for health policy experts to discuss key issues in health care economics and policy hosted by The Heller School for Social Policy and Management at Brandeis University. I presented my research on private equity investments in physician practices and participated in a thoughtful discussion with copanelists Zirui Song & Mary Bugbee from the Private Equity Stakeholder Project.

??Blackstone received the lowest score on PESP's Labor Scorecard due to its increased rate of wage and hour violations, OSHA violation fines, and mass layoffs. For the estimated 19,000 employees of Jersey Mike's, Blackstone ought to strive to do better. https://lnkd.in/g9QBga38

Pennsylvania has been in the spotlight with the recent election, and now we know private equity is zoning in on Philadelphia's healthcare sector. Our recent report identifies approximately 900 private equity-owned healthcare provider locations across the Greater Philadelphia area, from small clinics to major hospitals. With private equity’s wide footprint across Philadelphia healthcare, including in specialties like gastroenterology, urology, and urgent care, the metro area is particularly vulnerable to the industry’s negative impacts. bit.ly/PhillyHealthcare

“We have recently seen private equity enter the manufactured housing market," PESP housing research coordinator Madeline Bankson said. "And what we typically see is that they often raise rents significantly — we also see a lot of issues that residents report due to maintenance problems.”

In recent years, countless headlines have been dedicated to the topic of the growing presence of private equity in our economy. From industries as diverse as veterinarians, fast food and the makers of aircraft landing gear, private equity firms are increasingly taking stakes in industries that were traditionally the domain of small and/or medium-sized businesses. But what is private equity and what does its rise mean for Canada's economy? Read CAMP's new report, The Private Equity Playbook and learn more: ?? https://loom.ly/nddWkco ?? Prefer an audio version? Private equity firms like Carlyle, Brookfield, and EIG are responsible for a staggering 1.17 gigatons of CO2 emissions annually. The new 2024 Private Equity Climate Risks Scorecard shows these firms are still deeply invested in fossil fuels, with approximately two thirds of their energy portfolios tied to coal, oil, and gas. Despite claims of sustainability, these firms are doubling down on dirty energy and exposing themselves—and their investors—to significant financial and climate risks. It’s time for transparency, accountability, and real climate action from private equity.
