Teterboro Airport in New Jersey is extremely popular for those flying in and out of the New York City metropolitan area on corporate or private aircrafts. An aging air traffic control tower (Teterboro ATCT) needed a replacement and precast concrete producer, Unistress Corp. was ready to help. By using precast concrete, the project team achieved durability, resiliency, and quick turnaround time. The structure was built to withstand high winds, harsh weather, seismic conditions, and is likely to be in service for many years to come. The precast concrete workflow was centered on the BIM approach, helping to ensure all precast concrete components were produced, handled, and set in place as intended. This project is a 2025 PCI Design Awards winner in the Special category, BIM Award. Did you know that precast concrete is the ideal construction material for prioritizing safety? FORTRESS Nameplate expresses a new level of multi-hazardous protection using precast concrete, reaching beyond industrial settings. This modular solution showcases precast concrete's strength, non-combustible nature, and ability to withstand forces significantly higher than previous design limits. Designed as a monolithic, air-tight structure, this module has undergone rigorous testing to demonstrate its priority of safety. The precast concrete industry continues to move forward in protecting public health, safety, and welfare. As an older structure experiencing deterioration and other safety concerns, I-5 Over 26th Avenue Bridge in Oregon was due for a replacement. The Oregon Department of Transportation worked with precast concrete producer, Knife River Prestress, to design a unique bridge replacement solution. With the use of precast concrete, construction time was reduced, construction performance and quality were enhanced, and project cost was decreased. The outcome of this project benefits the community and public in many ways. This project is a 2025 Design Awards winner in the Transportation category, Bridge with a Main Span up to 75 Feet. The Fred D. Thompson U.S. Courthouse and Federal Building, in Nashville, Tennessee, used a variety of precast concrete to achieve sustainability features. The precast concrete components of this building were designed to be blast resistant and prevent the possibility of collapse. The project team, including precast concrete producer GATE Precast, incorporated photocatalytic concrete on the white precast concrete fa?ade. This special formula allows the concrete to be self-cleaning, therefore removing air pollutants from the atmosphere. The results of this structure, its resiliency, sustainability, and energy efficiency, have helped advance the capabilities of green building. This project also won two 2024 PCI Design Awards in the categories, Sustainable Design Award and Government & Public Building Honorable Mention.
