When I first began my HR career in the non-profit sector working with an organization serving vulnerable populations, I held a particular vision of homelessness: individuals facing significant life challenges (such as mental illness and chemical dependency) who needed specialized support. These individuals certainly exist and need our compassion and resources. But over time, seeing the experiences of friends, coworkers, and community members reshaped my understanding in a profound way. Today, my vision is more complex and more personal. I know people who work hard every day, sometimes with multiple jobs, yet can’t achieve a living wage. These are parents and individuals who, despite their best efforts, end up living in their cars, couch-surfing, or constantly worrying about having a safe place to sleep. They’re doing everything “right”—yet the cost of living and low wages keep them from achieving stability. In Monroe County alone, 748 people experience homelessness each night, and of those, 178 are children. These children have parents who are doing everything possible to give them a stable, happy life, but the barriers are just too high without a helping hand. This is where Person Centered Housing Options Inc. (PCHO) comes in. PCHO operates on a model that doesn’t differentiate between those experiencing homelessness due to complex life challenges or simply because of low wages. It’s about meeting each person where they are and helping them find stability, security, and dignity. That’s why I’m proud to be a board member of PCHO.
