March is recognized as Women's History Month, celebrating the often-overlooked contributions of women throughout history, society and culture. This week we will introduce you to Accounting Director, Tierra Deavers. Tierra oversees the Accounting Department which consists of the Revenue Audit, Payroll and Accounting Departments. These departments play a part in making sure that Potawatomi Casino Hotel is following both internal and external controls, providing accurate financial statements to executive leadership, and ensuring that everyone gets paid. ?? How does it feel to be a woman who has earned a leadership position at Potawatomi Casino Hotel? Unreal! I started with Potawatomi in January 2013, as an AP and Cash Tax Technician, basically an accounting assistant. I have seen many changes over the last 12 years, including some major changes in leadership. Even though I’ve been in the Director role now for 15 months, I still forget sometimes and “look over my shoulder” for the Director of Accounting before I laugh and realize they’re talking about me. ??What is the best piece of personal or professional advice you have ever received? Focus on yourself. Don’t measure your personal success against others around you. And take the chance even if you’re scared. That’s when you know it’s worth it. ?? What advice would you give to a new team member at Potawatomi Casino Hotel? Learn something from every single person around you both in and outside of work. Learn something about the company, the community, the world, the past, how to be a leader, and how NOT to be a leader… just never stop learning! ??Is there a female figure you looked up to? Over the years, the female figures I’ve looked up to have changed. Growing up, I always looked up to my Mom. She was a stay-at-home wife/mother for over 50 years! In my adult life, I have had several female bosses/managers that I’ve looked up to and was inspired by. “Some of them are whom I still work with today. Currently, the women I look up to and are inspired by the most are some of my best friends and peers. These women hold positions in our community such as an electrical inspector for the City of Milwaukee, a Design Engineer for Milwaukee Tool, a Global Fulfillment and Warehousing Center Manager, and CFO’s at local companies. How cool is that! ??? & ?? : Dawn Gardin
