Solar Best Practice of the Day: I serve as Treasurer of the RSA, and as CEO of PayKeeper - an escrow payment solutions platform for solar/home improvement. The solar industry best practice I'd like to mention, is job cost accounting. Job cost accounting is tracking the revenue and expenses per job, in order to know the profitability of each job. Most stop here, but there's more... Job cost accounting from a capital perspective also is understanding when capital comes into the business in any form, but specifically from a job, what it should be used for. A customer deposit of 50% of their solar project, for example, should be reserved for (and booked as a liability on the balance sheet until commensurate progress has been made on the project) and spent mostly on that customer's job. Very little should be spent on company G&A, and very little should be spent to fuel the company's growth - this figure should correspond to what profit margin is expected on the job. And if you don't know your profit margin - you're in the dark on how much you should spend on capex to grow. The same example would apply to any payments made to the contractor on behalf of the customer, by a finance provider. As an escrow company with a product designed to facilitate this best practice, I see the vast difference between the contractors who do so, and the ones who don't. Further, the reason I joined the RSA, and volunteer my time in furthering its mission, is that commitment to echo and amplify best practices, and make them not only the best, but the most used practices as well.
