I rarely negotiated a comp package in my career. Might be surprising from someone who was in sales for 20 years. I'm sure a lot of people will disagree with the notion. Here's my rationale. In an interview process we would have discussed my salary expectations. If they came in below that, they either A) don't believe in me enough or B) are trying to nickel and dime me. Neither is a place I'd want to be. Even if I successfully negotiated the package up, I would know how they valued me. So I'd decline the offer and move on. Similarly, if they make a strong offer I'm not going to negotiate just for the sake of negotiating. I'll happily accept! I took the same approach with raises and promotions. I very rarely asked. I instead worked as hard as I could and expected that if I was working with the right people they would promote me when I was ready, not when I demanded. And here's the thing - it worked. There are leaders out there who will make fair initial offers to candidates. There are leaders out there who will promote you when you're ready, sometimes even before you think you're ready. It's wonderful to advocate for yourself. But it's even better when others proactively advocate for you.

We've never fundraised at Pay Forward Coaching. We've held over 4000 free 1:1 coaching sessions with over 1500 individuals in the last two years. We've built a community of 2000+ members. We've assembled a team of over 100 passionate volunteers. All without ever asking for a penny. Everything has been bootstrapped and out of pocket. I'm now asking. My interim CRO role at CarOffer is winding down this quarter. It's been reinvigorating to be back into the daily mix, but I'm excited to get back to being fully immersed in the PFC world. I truly believe we can grow this into a platform that can change so many people's lives. But we need funds to improve our tech stack and advertise our services. If you've been following our journey and want to help, there are three immediate ways to make an impact: 1) Join our free Slack community and share advice wherever you can! Link in comments. 2) Donate funds! None of our volunteers including myself have ever been paid a penny. Our fundraising will support building our platform, services, and brand to help even more people. Link in comments. We are a 501(c)(3) organization and donations are tax-deductible. 3) Donate your technical expertise! We are looking to move our community off free slack, and build a website/platform that incorporates all the matching logic for coaching and host our own community. If you or someone you know can help, we have a volunteer job posting up! Again, link in comments.

Recruiting Leader @ Zapier | Former Educator | Advocate for job seekers, demystifying recruiting, and making the workplace more equitable for everyone!!

Y'all, the October Onslaught has arrived at Zapier. What's the October Onslaught? Oh, it's a phrase I just coined for when we suddenly post a lot of roles in October and need you to apply!! We've added quite a few roles this week, and my team will be posting several additional roles across a range of levels/locations THIS week! Here's some of what you get when you join Zapier: ????100% remote (FOREVER - we have no offices!) ??Competitive compensation with bonuses/equity plans (varies by location - compensation is listed in the job description, and discussed live with your recruiter in your first conversation!) ???Flexible PTO ??Awesome and supportive values and company culture And here are my TOP TIPS to land an interview: ? Emails/DMs are not considered applications. In order to be considered, you must apply directly to the position posted on our jobs page. ?Please take the application seriously. We care more about those responses than we do about your resume. Complete those questions thoroughly. ? While we are remote, we do typically have time zone/location constraints on roles so read the posting for those details. ? We typically see that strong applicants meet most of the descriptors in the "About You" section (and show this on their resume/application). I will share some links around what to expect in the hiring process, as well as some specifics on roles I could use the support of my network in drumming up more applicants! Excited to hire some awesome people to join the team!!!

Thank you Neil Shevlin for taking time to help me with career coaching! (resume & search advice) Neil is one of the amazing volunteer coaches that work with Pay Forward Coaching. ?? I am sure you've heard: everyone can benefit from a coach, at any experience level. It certainly helps to see yourself from another's point of view. Even if you are not in a search today, you may be very soon--no matter who you are or how successful. It never hurts to be prepared. In the spirit of paying forward, let me know if I can help with your search--especially students or new graduates. Most will agree: no one teaches the realities of career ups & downs in school! Too many people see that "Open to Work" sign as an easy target to make a quick buck. From paid communities, to MLM-style courses, to folks with minimal experience branding themselves career coaches and charging thousands for their generic advice, folks are often exploiting people's desperation. But there ARE free resources out there: Pay Forward Coaching offers a free 1:1 coaching session as well as a free community with experienced coaches (and no upsell) EarnBetter offers a free AI resume tool and job board. Landed! is my newsletter for jobseekers where I share advice for navigating both job searches and the workplace (and I also share jobs on this page!) Lyft offers free rides to interviews and your first few weeks on the job. CareerOneStop is a free resource with tools for job search, and they have a lot of resources in particular for veterans, justice-impacted individuals, etc. Dress for Success Worldwide, Bottomless Closet, and Career Gear are just a handful of the many organizations that will help you get dressed for that interview or new job, and many offer additional supports to job seekers. I'm dropping a list of these resources in comments, and if you know of other totally free resources (with no upsell!), feel free to share them as well!

At Pay Forward Coaching we spend a lot of time discussing how to find your next role. I think we spend less on how to transition into that new role. 60 days into my own new role, some personal reflections, learnings, and re-learnings: * Ask a million questions! And then ask some more. This was something I didn't do well in prior roles. This time I'm being intentional about questioning everything, and I feel like it's the fastest I've ever ramped up. * Make quick moves. I see a lot of advice about 30/60/90 plans, where the first 30 is purely observation and learning. There is often low-hanging fruit that you can go after more quickly. Don't be afraid to (thoughtfully) break a few eggs early on. * Get to know everyone. Prioritize 1:1s and small group meetings with not only your team/peers but also as many cross-functional people as possible. For me this means in-person whenever possible - it's just a different level of connection you make when you're physically in the same place. * Draw your own conclusions. Many people in the business will likely share their viewpoints on people, process, strategy, etc. Listen, but don't take what they say as gospel. Instead, investigate and develop your own viewpoints, which could be very different.

Procrastination can be a significant hurdle when searching for a job. Tackling it requires a mix of strategies to stay focused, motivated, and productive. Here are some effective ways to combat procrastination in your job search: 1) Set Clear Goals: Define what you want to achieve each day. Break down your job search into smaller, manageable tasks such as updating your resume, writing a cover letter, or applying to a certain number of jobs. Clear goals provide direction and make the process less overwhelming. 2) Create a Schedule: Allocate specific times of the day for job searching. Treat it like a job with dedicated hours. A consistent routine helps build momentum and reduces the temptation to delay. 3) Eliminate Distractions: Identify what distracts you most and take steps to minimize it. This could mean finding a quiet place to work, turning off notifications, or using apps that block distracting websites. 4) Prioritize Tasks: Use the Eisenhower Matrix to categorize tasks based on urgency and importance. Focus on high-priority tasks first to ensure you’re making meaningful progress. 5) Stay Organized: Keep track of the jobs you’ve applied to, upcoming deadlines, and follow-up actions. Tools like spreadsheets or job search apps can help you stay organized and avoid last-minute scrambles. 6) Seek Support: Share your goals with a friend or join a job search group. Accountability can boost your motivation and provide encouragement when you hit a rough patch. 7) Reward Yourself: Set up a reward system for completing tasks. This could be something simple like a short break, a treat, or an activity you enjoy. Rewards create positive reinforcement and make the process more enjoyable. 8) Practice Self-care: Job searching can be stressful. Make sure to take care of your physical and mental health. Exercise, eat well, and get enough rest to keep your energy levels up. By implementing these strategies, you can combat procrastination and make your job search more efficient and successful. Remember, persistence and consistency are key. Stay focused, and keep moving forward.
