The devastation and loss experienced in the Los Angeles area as a result of the recent fires has brought up a lot of conversation about alternative building materials, particularly concrete. Designing and building with Insulated Concrete Forms (ICFs) can be an important consideration for homes positioned in fire zones. This type of material uses foam blocks to create strong, well-insulated, energy efficient structures that are much more fire resilient than their wooden counterparts. Preserving the original historic character of this lakeside home was an essential design consideration. Even with a structure that needed significant rehabilitation, the existing tellis was preserved and PEI was pleased to present the design for a new perimeter structure to closely mimic the original building.
