William Oliver Patterson, grandson of founder M.F., graduated from Princeton with a degree in chemical engineering in 1932. Bill took over Patterson’s Gold Manufacturing Division in 1934, a time when gold was widely used for fillings as well as partial dentures. In 1935, Bill set up the gold division as a separate company called General Refineries in Minneapolis, Minnesota. Bill ensured the survival of the company, and Patterson was able to maintain its position in the dental industry while many suppliers closed or were forced to liquidate during World War II. At one point during that time, our records show as many as 100 Patterson employees enlisted in the armed services – a high number for what was then a small company. The impact meant realigning of sales territories, calling on customers every three to four weeks rather than weekly and encouraging dentists to order by mail or telephone - a concept that, at the time, was fairly revolutionary. Bill became our company’s third president in 1949, serving till 1965, seeing the company through the Great Depression, World War II and into the “modern” eras of the ’50s and ’60s.

Our very own Patterson Veterinary Supply recently hosted their Guiding Practice Success (GPS) event to connect veterinarians looking to open a new practice or expand an existing business. This year's event was three days jam-packed with action. Sessions covered financing and real estate negotiation, hospital design, marketing and inventory planning! What do Dolphin Imaging, a Patterson president, and Keith Moon of The Who have in common? Well, not much, other than helping spawn the rock-inspired cover band Last Call, a creative musical outlet for two Patterson employees. Ken Gladstone, senior software engineering manager at Dolphin Imaging, is the drummer for Last Call. “We Dolphin partners sold to Patterson in December 2008, and that’s how I first met Patterson Regional Director Paul Guggenheim. Dolphin President Chester Wang, Paul and I formed a trio cover band. The three of us had grown up within a few miles of each other, we are all about the same age, and we have similar musical tastes,” Gladstone said. Bonding over a love of Rush, Led Zeppelin and The Police, the band’s first proper performance was playing at a Dolphin company retreat, a gig Gladstone jokingly described as perfect due to the staff being “contractually obligated to like us!” COVID through a wrench in their plans to go platinum though, and the group had to get creative with their practice sessions. They would play at their keyboard player's backyard or in a garage. They've since gone to play at amphitheaters, car shows, concert halls and more!
