In St. Louis, the urban heat island effect is making the city an average of 7 degrees hotter than its surrounding areas, increasing the risk of heat-related illnesses and fatalities. This alarming statistic highlights the urgent need for action as climate change continues to exacerbate extreme heat conditions. To address this Missouri Coalition for the Environment has launched a three-year initiative focused on developing legislative solutions and creating a toolkit for municipalities. Funded by a $408,000 grant from the Missouri Foundation for Health, this initiative aims to conduct research, engage with the community, and advocate for effective strategies to combat rising temperatures. The initiative will kick off with listening sessions starting November 16, allowing residents to voice their concerns and contribute to solutions that will help make St. Louis cooler and safer for all. Many of these women experience symptoms long before receiving a diagnosis. Recognizing the signs early can be life-saving. Yesterday, the Soldiers Memorial Military Museum unveiled the "Ghost Army: The Combat Con Artists of World War II" exhibit, highlighting the remarkable story of the 23rd Headquarters Special Troops. Activated on January 20, 1944, this top-secret unit was the first mobile, multimedia tactical deception unit in U.S. Army history, consisting of 82 officers and 1,203 men. The Ghost Army employed techniques such as inflatable tanks, fake radio traffic, and sound effects to create the illusion of a military presence that could simulate two entire divisions—approximately 30,000 troops—deceiving German forces during the final year of World War II. The exhibit will feature a range of artifacts including inflatable military equipment, archival photographs, and personal narratives that detail the unit's operations across Europe from Normandy to the Rhine River. Organized by The National WWII Museum in New Orleans and sponsored by the E.L. Wiegand Foundation, "Ghost Army" will run from September 25, 2024, through January 12, 2025.
