We're empowering the next generation of leaders and changemakers with the My Community, My Vision (MCMV) program -- an expansion of our CreatINg Places program with the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA). MCMV is a youth-driven placemaking partnership connecting young people in Indiana to the places they live and allowing them the opportunity to make a positive impact in their communities.

So many issues facing our communities, and our nation, can be traced back to a lack of basic human connection: diminishing trust, worsening health outcomes and fewer opportunities to encounter, interact with and work together with our fellow community members. The enormous negative ramifications of an increasing deficit of social connection in the U.S. makes this an all hands on deck issue. That means we need to consider not only practice changes, but also policy changes?—?at all levels of government?—?that support more social connection. So the question for policymakers then becomes, how? In Auburn, Indiana, the Junior Auburn Main Street, led by a group of dedicated high school students, has realized a youth-led vision for the community through the Indiana Housing and Community Development Authority (IHCDA)'s My Community, My Vision program. In 2024, Junior Auburn Main Street partnered with the Auburn American Legion Post 97 to develop the DeKalb County Veterans Memorial to honor local veterans near Auburn’s waterfront district. The memorial will feature stone pillars etched with the names of those who served. Benches, lighting, and ADA accessibility will create a place for reflection and community gatherings. Once complete, the project will stand as a lasting legacy for future generations. The project crowdfunded $50,295 on Patronicity and, by reaching its goal, received $50,000 from the IHCDA. Public Spaces Community Places (PSCP) is a powerful crowdgranting program and public placemaking initiative that builds vibrant communities across Michigan. Created by the Michigan Economic Development Corporation (MEDC) in 2014 in collaboration with the Michigan Municipal League (MML) and Patronicity, PSCP was the first program of its kind in the country. The MEDC remains committed to supporting these efforts across Michigan and has contributed $13 million in matching grant funds since 2014.
