Can establishing an extreme wealth line be an answer to addressing the risks of extreme wealth? We worked with the fabulous New Economics Foundation who developed a new report to explore the concept. The report explores the concept of an extreme wealth line (EWL) from the perspective of some key stakeholder groups, interviewing 15 millionaires and 10 politicians and policy experts across key G20 countries. Across the board, extreme wealth was viewed as a systemic failure. Many argued that the accumulation of vast wealth is inherently inequitable, and that it harms justice and democracy. There is widespread support for an EWL as a tool to help shift public & political thinking, fostering discussions about extreme wealth and any harm it causes. One policy expert said, “It could motivate...public debate and policymaking in the same way the extreme poverty line did.” When asked about how to set an EWL, millionaires were more likely to propose an absolute number, with one third setting the line at $10m. On the other hand, political figures and policy experts were reluctant to put a number to the line and supported relative metrics. Overall, the report finds that an EWL could provide a unique opportunity for wide collaboration and discussion to catalyse change in how we think about wealth and how it’s distributed, and regulated, for the greater good. After daily slaps in the face from both the US and our own Government, great to be on my way back from a really motivating evening of Gary’s Economics. Along with my 2 sons, I joined a packed Hackney Empire to hear Gary Stevenson’s stories of life as a city trader. Plus more importantly his realisation that the system is rigged to make the wealthy ever wealthier on the back of the struggles of everyone else. Gary is a fellow founding member of Patriotic Millionaires UK. Witnessing the receptiveness of the audience to the message that, to look after ourselves, we need to look after each other, I couldn’t be prouder to be part of our movement. Wealth extremism is making us all poorer. Taxing wealth to invest in restoring our neglected public services and infrastructure is a necessity and until we face up to this we will all continue to leave our world is less welcoming place for our children. Growth - what is it good for? This Government’s slightly manic growth mantra suggests that they have forgotten- in their headless chicken approach - that growth isn’t an end in itself. It’s a means to achieve something - and presumably, as our Government, the end they should be trying to achieve is higher welfare, better financial stability, good safe living conditions, good jobs, homes and food for the British people. None of this is threatened by bats and newts and in claiming that it is the Chancellor shows that she is either not on top of the facts, or like the previous Government, thinks that facts shouldn’t get in the way of a smoke and mirrors narrative to distract from the real solutions that this Government doesn’t want to take - because it’s listening to, and protecting the interests, of a small incredibly wealthy group of wealth hoggers. Positive growth that benefits the British people is being held back by wealth extremism that has hoovered up wealth into the hands of the few at the expense of us all. Instead of getting the investment to fill the black hole through fair and economically sound taxation of wealth - this Government increased tax on the lowest paid jobs by lowering the NI threshold and increasing Employers NI. A truly shameful alternative to increasing tax on often unproductive (for the British people) wealth. To try to bury this inexcusable mistake the Government are doubling down on blame shifting - adding bats and newts to the refugees and long term sick scapegoat selection pack spewed out in a desperate attempt to sound as hard nosed as the Government they replaced. This is poor governance, poor economic planning and bad health and safety - for the British people who depend on our wildlife far more than it depends on us.
