Latest Street Talk podcast — The knife fight for deposits could spur more bank deals — Deposits and liquidity remain at the forefront for most bankers and the intense competition for core funding will eventually lead to a resurgence in M&A activity. That was the message delivered by a variety of presenters at S&P Global Market Intelligence’s annual community bankers conference on May 20 and 21, but they acknowledged that transactions face some challenges in the near term, including lower valuations, fewer would-be buyers and regulatory pressures that tend to require more capital in deals.?Thanks to the terrific presenters who were included in the episode: Kelly A. Brown at Ampersand, Inc.; Greg Muenzen at Curinos; Joshua Siegel at StoneCastle; Umrai Gill at Performance Trust Capital Partners; Jonathan Hightower at Fenimore Kay Harrison LLP; Scott Studwell at Stephens; Caspar Bentinck at Piper Sandler; Matthew Veneri at Janney Montgomery Scott LLC and Kevin Stein at Klaros Group's Klaros Capital. https://lnkd.in/ea3XiKga

"The?banks that failed in 2023?shared one key similarity: high concentrations of?uninsured deposits. Yet regulators like the Federal Deposits Insurance Corp. remain convinced that the real cause was "poor management" — and that the?solution?lies in more bank supervision and maintenance. While this may be useful, regulators should also consider another strategy if they want to address the nagging problem of uninsured deposits and improve bank stability in 2024 and beyond. Principally, they should reconsider their assumptions and definitions governing core and brokered deposits." Read more from Ampersand Chief Strategy Officer Reid Thomas in American Banker, below.

Insured or uninsured. American Banker hits another homerun with this article. If you are a banker and don't subscribe, look into it. It is the most up-to-date information for you to make critical decisions.
You're either Federal Deposit Insurance Corporation (FDIC)-insured or you're not. The FDIC wants to make it crystal clear which is which, Ebrima Santos Sanneh reports for American Banker.
