In 2024, the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention's theme for U.S. Antibiotic Awareness Week (#USAAW), November 18–24, is “Fighting Antimicrobial Resistance Takes All of Us.” The daily theme for November 20 is human health and antimicrobial resistance. It’s vital for both healthcare providers and patients to understand how and when to use antibiotics to treat and prevent illnesses. Be aware that antibiotics can only treat infections caused by bacteria, such as strep throat and urinary tract infections, not viruses. And antibiotics must only be taken as prescribed, and any unused medications should be properly disposed of. Read and share articles from PATIENT SAFETY that highlight measures hospitals and long-term care facilities can take to practice antibiotic stewardship: https://lnkd.in/eDyDENb4

There's still time to register for this Thursday's free webinar, "Nourishing Health Literacy: How to Serve Up Better Understanding." Healthcare providers in Pennsylvania play an important role in ensuring patients have the knowledge they require to make informed decisions. Effectively communicating appropriate details while addressing each patient’s unique needs and concerns remains a challenge for both providers and patients. The team will define health literacy, describe the scope and implications of the problem, identify the barriers that patients and providers have when trying to address low health literacy, and outline strategies to improve health literacy. 1.0 continuing education hours will be awarded for completion of this course. Continuing education credits apply to Pennsylvania registered nurses only. Register now at https://lnkd.in/eNjSZVwj

Did you know that November is C. diff Awareness Month? Clostridioides difficile (C. diff) is a bacteria which can lead to diarrhea, colitis, and even death. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention estimates that C. diff causes nearly half a million infections in the United States each year. Although anyone can get a C. diff infection, certain factors increase their risk, including recent antibiotic use, previous C. diff infections or exposure, age (65 and older), whether they have been in a hospital or long-term care facility, and a weakened immune system. Learn more about how to appropriately diagnose and treat patients for C. diff: https://lnkd.in/eFYxdceG
